UNION ARMY 1861 to 1865:

🔶 During the crisis of 1861 in America there was a spontaneous mobilization of German-Americans and Germans, often 1848 emigrants, for the Union. In large parts of the UNIONSARMEE you could only get ahead "with German". Especially the German gymnastics associations in the tradition of gymnastics father Jahn set up volunteer units or nipped the "secession" of the South in the bud, as in the dispute over the arms of the federal arsenal of St. Louis, Missouri, the "Black Jäger Corps" of the German gymnast won.
🔶 Outstanding personalities were the Baden Revolutionary General from 1849, Franz Sigel, who fought as a US general, and German US general Carl Schurz, who later became the US Secretary of the Interior.
Generals Alexander Schimmelpfennig, Peter Joseph Osterhaus, August (von) Willich and Ludwig Blenker should also be mentioned.
🔶 The song "I goes to fight with Sigel" was a popular song by the German Union soldiers, who also expressed their preference for sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and pretzels here.
🔶 Today one expects the descendants of these soldiers who fought for the existence of the Union and the end of slavery and died to go "on their knees" because they are "white". Times are changing.
