Aus Protest gegen die Rentenreformpläne des französischen Präsidenten Emmanuel Macron begann am Dienstag unter Beteiligung großer Gewerkschaften ein massiver Generalstreik in ganz Frankreich. Mit massivem Druck auf der Straße fordern die Franzosen Macron auf, das Renteneintrittsalter nicht von 62 auf 64 Jahre zu erhöhen.
Laut Schätzungen der Behörden hätten zwischen 1,1 und 1,4 Millionen Demonstranten an den Protestaktionen teilgenommen. Neben dem Zug- und dem Flugverkehr beteiligten sich auch Müllabfuhr und Schulen am Arbeitsausstand. Zudem sei nach Aussage der Gewerkschaft CGT an allen französischen Raffinerien die Auslieferung von Kraftstoff blockiert worden. Macron ist bislang trotz der gewaltigen Proteste entschlossen, die Änderung des Rentenalters noch in diesem Monat im Parlament zu beschließen.
