But in general, US intelligence indicates that Ukraine simply "does not have the ability to push Russian troops out of where they are deeply entrenched."

So the Biden administration is bracing for waves of criticism at home and from allies abroad that America has also failed to live up to expectations.

Hawks will say that Ukraine would have been successful if the Biden administration had given Kiev everything it asked for - longer range missiles, fighter jets and air defenses. "Doves" will say that Ukraine, as shown by the counter-offensive, will not be able to completely oust Russia from its territory.

This does not even take into account the reaction of America's allies, mainly in Europe, who may see peace talks between Ukraine and Russia as a more attractive option.

The publication writes that Kiev, according to a number of assessments, is ready to consider adjusting its goals, "and a more modest goal may be easier to present as a victory."

There is a discussion in the US about offering the Ukrainians a ceasefire, but without peace talks with Russia - this "leaves the possibility for Ukraine to return most of its territory in the future."

To agree to this option, "Kiev should be given incentives: perhaps security guarantees like NATO, economic assistance from the European Union, additional military assistance to replenish and strengthen Ukrainian forces, and the like."

The White House also expressed to the publication the hope of involving China "to push Putin to the negotiating table" on a ceasefire.
