"Days later, around 1 a.m. on July 16, DCF workers and police officers knocked at their door to take both sons away. They didn't have a warrant or a court order, neither of which are required to remove a child in Massachusetts and other states.

“It was intense. We see that these police officers are armed. We're asking for paperwork and there's none to be had,” Perkins said. “Eventually we were told that either we hand over the kids or they're going to break down our door and take them by force.”

Happening Now: Hundreds of Amazon employees are protesting outside HQ in Seattle for being “forced” to return to work in-person.

Amazon mandated employees to return to the office last month. They have been working remote since the start of the scamdemic.

Dad advice:

The narrative about how children are expensive and you should wait until you're "ready" is absolute garbage.

People in the past raised huge families in shacks with no running water. You will never truly be "ready". If you wait until you're ready, it will never come.

It's better to raise a family while young and poor than old and rich. Youth is worth more than money.

Luckily I became a father in my mid-20's. If I could start over, I'd do it earlier even though I had less money.

Trust me, once that baby comes, you'll figure it out. The myth about how babies are expensive is crap. You'll make it happen and you'll adjust.

TIL that when J.R.R. Tolkien was asked what he thought about Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, he replied he disliked it “with some intensity” and said it wouldn’t be fair to say anything negative about another working author.

9 Considerations When Choosing a Chicken

1. Climate Compatibility
: The Only Essential
—cold hardy or heat tolerant. Buy a breed that will thrive in your climate — especially if you live in a place of extreme weather.

2. Purpose: Egg, Meat, Dual Purpose
— every chicken can be eaten and every hen will lay eggs. However, some are bred specifically for one or the other.

For instance, Leghorns are excellent egg chickens — laying lots of eggs with less feed needs than other breeds — but they never really get big enough to make them an ideal meat bird.

Freedom Rangers are faster growing for earlier butchering —but also lay eggs . (without being totally weird like the Cornish Cross that has been engineered for meat to the point that you have to butcher them at a young age.)

Heritage Breeds are dual purpose. They mature more slowly, but reach body weight to make them worth butchering. They're also reliable egg layers.

More tomorrow....

Series: 9 Considerations When Choosing a Chicken

3. Heritage Breed or Not
—I love Heritage Breed Livestock. There are lots of heritage breed chickens and they're the best chickens for a homestead, in my opinion. They're all dual purpose — meat and eggs. They are reportedly hardier than modernized breeds, with fewer health problems. They're more likely to go broody than modern "specialized" breeds. I also love the connection I have with the ancestors when I think about keeping the same.

4. Broodiness
— There are breeds that the broodiness has been bred out of them on purpose because people want egg machines, not chiggen mamas. This is not the case with Heritage Breeds. There are breeds known for their desire to brood their own eggs and care for their chicks. Buff Orpingtons make exceptional mothers ❤️ Bantams love to brood eggs and will brood eggs from any chicken.
