Congress received a $50 million budget request from the US Air Force for a "security dormitory" at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, where 110 US nuclear bombs were stored until 2008, the newspaper writes.
The document uses the term "safety", which is used in the language of the US military in relation to nuclear weapons. It can be interpreted, among other things, as "a technical possibility for the safe and secure storage of nuclear weapons."
Last year's budget included a NATO project to build "secure sites and facilities" to store "special weapons" in a number of Western countries, including the UK, but the Suffolk base itself was not mentioned.
