"The Population Bomb" (1971) was written by a zero population growth (for Americans) enthusiast who recommended that Americans stop having children because, "we cannot hope or expect to convince the rest of the world to stop multiplying if we do not" (Ehrlich, 1968). He recommended brainwashing children about the need to control birth rate: "We need a federal law requiring sex education in schools — sex education that includes discussion of the need for regulating the birth rate and of the techniques of birth control. Such education should begin at the earliest age" The fear catch line as to why Americans need to take such action is, "Americans are beginning to realize that the undeveloped countries of the world face an inevitable population-food crisis." Despite his failed predictions he feels that "The COVID moment could help us learn what we should have learned." He wants women to have "full rights and responsibilities to take control of their bodies" (Ehrlich, 2020).
