"Today, looking back at Gamergate, there are few facts on which people agree. It properly kicked off in 2014, when a computer-game designer named Zoë Quinn was the subject of an angry blogpost by an ex-boyfriend. Quinn faced unsubstantiated accusations of sleeping with reviewers for favourable press, and her outraged friends reacted the way outraged friends will do. Gaming journalists tried to come to her aid with a number of angry think-pieces, but this fired up a lot of equally angry young men, even those who had nothing to do with Quinn’s harassment. The alt-Right – represented in the popular imagination by the provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos – used the opportunity of this heightened sense of grievance as a recruitment tool.

The sudden emergence of a full blown war between Hamas and Israel which just broke out with wall to wall coverage on the M5M will obscure a lot of news domestic and abroad. The Israeli conflict is marked by a couple of themes which may give us some understanding of its underpinnings. The first is that is happened on a day that marked a number of anniversaries including the Yom Kippur War. The second is that is comes on the heels of a potential deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel. And the third thing you will hear over and over and over is that the event is an “intelligence failure” with commentary about what an amazing surprise took place.

In fact, this discussion about an intelligence failure is so prevalent that it is easy to assume that there was no intelligence failure at all and the entire event was expected and allowed to play out for some political purpose including ending the protests against the Israeli government over its desire to change the way the judiciary operates. That action must now take a back seat to this upcoming mess which some think might last for months.

Of course the Intel agencies including the Mossad and our CIA will have to take it on the chin with “How could this happen?” and “What are we paying you guys for?” rebukes. But keeping secrets and scheming is their real job. So who knows what really went on behind the scenes?
