The sudden emergence of a full blown war between Hamas and Israel which just broke out with wall to wall coverage on the M5M will obscure a lot of news domestic and abroad. The Israeli conflict is marked by a couple of themes which may give us some understanding of its underpinnings. The first is that is happened on a day that marked a number of anniversaries including the Yom Kippur War. The second is that is comes on the heels of a potential deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel. And the third thing you will hear over and over and over is that the event is an “intelligence failure” with commentary about what an amazing surprise took place.

In fact, this discussion about an intelligence failure is so prevalent that it is easy to assume that there was no intelligence failure at all and the entire event was expected and allowed to play out for some political purpose including ending the protests against the Israeli government over its desire to change the way the judiciary operates. That action must now take a back seat to this upcoming mess which some think might last for months.

Of course the Intel agencies including the Mossad and our CIA will have to take it on the chin with “How could this happen?” and “What are we paying you guys for?” rebukes. But keeping secrets and scheming is their real job. So who knows what really went on behind the scenes? Why did the Hamas Attack happen now - Keith Woods:

"No one is really discussing what sparked this attack by Hamas. This latest attack was called the "al-Aqsa Flood" by Hamas.

This is because the reason given for its timing is Israel allowing "Jewish groups to desecrate al-Aqsa Mosque”.

Recently, the Israeli government has begun to support extremist Jewish groups attacking and expelling Muslims and Christians from their holy sites.

Extremist Jewish groups like the Temple Institute believe it is necessary to build the third temple on the site of the Aqsa mosque to bring about the Jewish messiah (which many Christians think will be the antichrist).

These Jewish groups have been trying to breed a "blemish free" red cow to fulfil prophecy and bring about the end times, even using advanced embryo selection technology to try and breed this sacrificial cow.

Recently, in a further escalation against Muslims and Christians they have been sprinkling heifer's blood on the site.

This year and especially in recent weeks, this antagonism against Muslims and Christians has massively accelerated. Christian churches have been attacked with statues of Jesus desecrated, as Jewish settlers believe they must destroy all religious idols in the land to fulfil prophecy.

Over the summer, Jewish settlers occupied and attempted to seize by force Christian churches in Israel. It has also become common for these settlers to spit on and abuse Christians in the vicinity of the holy site, as recent, widely shared footage on social media has demonstrated.

Days ago, dozens of settlers stormed the Aqsa mosque to perform "Talmudic rituals". Israeli forces these religious extremists, expelling Palestinian worshippers from their most sacred holy site.

This is all extremely relevant context that has been left out of this discussion as the whole focus becomes individual instances of violence. The ultranationalist Israeli government has been supporting the antagonism of extremist Jewish groups against Muslim and Christians in the Holy Land for years, and this continues to accelerate.

It's impossible to have an informed discussion about this conflict while ignoring this."

Yitzhak Segev, who was the Israeli military governor in Gaza in the early 1980s, later told the New York Times Jerusalem bureau chief that he was giving money to the Muslim Brotherhood, the precursor of Hamas, on the instruction of the Israeli authorities. The funding was intended to tilt power away from both Communist and Palestinian nationalist movements in Gaza, and especially from Arafat (who himself referred to Hamas as “a creature of Israel”), which Israel considered more threatening than the fundamentalists. “The Israeli government gave me a budget”, the retired brigadier general confessed, “and the military government gives to the mosques”.

“Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel’s creation”, Avner Cohen, a former Israeli religious affairs official who worked in Gaza for more than two decades, told the Wall Street Journal in 2009. Back in the mid-1980s, Cohen even wrote an official report to his superiors warning them not to play divide-and-rule in the Occupied Territories, by backing Palestinian Islamists against Palestinian secularists. “I… suggest focusing our efforts on finding ways to break up this monster before this reality jumps in our face”, he wrote.
