When the air is hot near the ground, like on the asphalt on a hot day, light travels a bit faster through the hot air than through cooler air higher up. The result is a mirage as light bends up, making it look as though a pool of water reflected the light.

This is the reverse effect. The lake is cooler than the air at the end of a hot day, so light bends down, making it possible to see beyond the horizon.
