And then Russia also paid 2 million (Joachimsthalers — silver coins) for the lands including present-day Estonia and part of Latvia. It was a huge amount of money. Sweden's annual budget of the time.

In 1795 Duke Peter Biron (he is 300 years old today) abdicated the throne of Courland in favour of Russia, which had been subsidising his country for many years.

And for this he received a huge 500 thousand Russian gold coins.

So Courland (i.e. the core part of modern Latvia) also became a subject of the Empire.

And has not sold it to anyone since then.
