I’ve figured out why women say Tolkien can’t write female characters.

It isn’t because there are no female characters in his stories, nor that he writes women as weak. It is because his female characters, whether good or evil, are all isolates. Even Shelob is shown completely alone in the midst of her webs. Galadriel gifts the Fellowship cloaks that she and her handmaidens have woven, but we never see the handmaidens. Eowyn is trapped and alone because she has no women friends, not just because Theoden is under Wormtongue’s spell.

Women aren’t looking for “strong female characters” as such—although they say they are. Women recognize that women’s real strength is in the networks and courts they create. A woman without a court is powerless and alone, no matter how beautiful she is or how many men serve her.

Tolkien’s female characters are written like women whom men love—but see only in isolation from their family and friends. That is why they strike women readers as appealing but sad. Tolkien’s wife Edith had the same experience, being a beloved wife in Oxford, surrounded by Tolkien’s friends, but missing her own.
