🇨🇳🧪🇦🇶 China’s fifth research station in Antarctica sparks concerns about its ambitions

The launch of Qinling station on Feb 7, however, has sparked concerns about China’s ambitions on the continent, which has no permanent inhabitants, unlike the Arctic.

The expansion seeks to position China as a major scientific player in Antarctica, in line with its emerging great-power status, said Professor Marc Lanteigne, who teaches political science at the University of Tromso: The Arctic University of Norway.

“At the same time, it (could) potentially lay the groundwork for increased economic activities should the legal situation in the region change in the coming decades,” Prof Lanteigne told The Straits Times.

Mining is currently banned in Antarctica under the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, also known as the Madrid Protocol, which came into force in 1998. A concern is that China may press for a rethinking of the mining opportunities on the continent when this treaty is up for review in 2048, said Prof Lanteigne.

He noted that while China has research and economic interests on both poles, it faces less competition in Antarctica, given that the continent has no permanent inhabitants.

Assistant Professor Benjamin Ho said in the Arctic, countries such as Russia and the United States have staked claims, so China could see this as an opportunity to venture within Antarctica. “You can’t call yourself a global great power if you don’t have a presence around the globe,” said Prof Ho, who specialises in Chinese foreign policy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.

A new MintPress News study of media coverage of the deaths of American journalist and commentator Gonzalo Lira and Russian political leader Alexey Navalny has found that the establishment U.S. press overwhelmingly ignored the former and focussed on the latter. The New York Times, Washington Post, ABC News, Fox News and CNN collectively ran 731 segments on Navalny between February 16 and February 22, compared to just one on Lira since his death on January 12, perhaps because one was a Western-backed figure who died at the hands of an official enemy state, while the other was a pro-Russian voice who met their end at the hands of the Ukrainian government. https://www.mintpressnews.com/worthy-vs-unworthy-victims-study-reveals-media-selective-coverage-navalny-lira/286911/

Borisov spoke about plans for cooperation with China in the lunar programme

"Roscosmos" together with Chinese colleagues is considering the delivery and installation on the lunar surface of a nuclear power plant in 2033-2035, Roscosmos CEO Yuri Borisov said on Tuesday.

Today we are seriously considering a project somewhere around the turn of 2033-2035 to deliver and install an energy installation on the lunar surface together with our Chinese colleagues

Borisov said at the "Knowledge.Firsts" marathon as part of the World Youth Festival.

He specified that such a mission would be carried out in automatic mode for radiation safety reasons.

According to him, the technological tasks necessary for the creation of such a facility have been practically solved.

The head of the state corporation explained that only at the expense of nuclear power it will be possible to ensure the operation of the equipment of the future station on the surface of the Moon. The fact is that the lunar day lasts 27 Earth days and half of this time the sunlight does not fall on the surface of the Earth's natural satellite. Therefore, solar batteries, which are traditional for astronautics, cannot be used there, Borisov noted.

"End it. Formal publishing is not just useless, it’s downright harmful. And there is no need of it.

"Science began with highly intelligent men writing letters to each other, and showing the copies around. A fine practice.

"It kept the noise to a minimum. Formal publishing is now almost entirely noise. There are more than 8 million papers published a year now, a number going up and up and up. Nobody reads them. Why should they? They are almost all useless. Nearly all exist because, and only because, academics must publish or perish. Must.

"If we eliminated formal publications, much of this persiflage would dry up, and our best and brightest would be able to concentrate on their own work, and not be harassed with “peer review” requests.

"The only people who have respect for peer review are those who have never experienced it."

"Einstein would write to The Times praising the “high and proud tradition of English science” in those who set out “to test a theory that had been completed and published in the country of their enemies in the midst of war.” From one pacifist/scientist to another, that would have been music to Eddington’s ears."

🌌 Exciting Update from the Moon: Japan’s SLIM Mission 🌕

In an astonishing turn of events, the Japanese spacecraft SLIM, which had capsized upon landing, has “awoken” nearly a month later in hibernation mode. Despite the harrowing cold of the lunar night, reaching temperatures as low as -130°C, the resilient explorer has not only survived but has also managed to send back new images and is even collecting some scientific data.

Signs are growing that the U.S. Air Force is about to conduct another live-fire test of its AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon hypersonic missile, or ARRW, but this time staged from Guam.

Last week, the service showed off a live AGM-183A under the wing of a B-52H bomber at Andersen Air Force Base on the highly strategic U.S. Pacific island territory, stating it was there for show and tell of sorts with deployed B-52 crews. The event was peculiar and as noted in The War Zone's initial reporting on it, a test of the weapon from Guam seemed like a better explanation for it being sent there. This would be a first-of-its-kind show of force, aimed primarily at sending signals to China, and raises questions about the Air Force's previously stated plans to cancel ARRW. https://www.twz.com/air/unprecedented-u-s-hypersonic-weapon-test-in-west-pacific-appears-imminent

Key Club of Rome member, Dennis Meadows, hopes the "necessary" depopulation of Planet Earth, down to one billion—an 87.5% reduction from today’s population—can "occur in a civil way".

"The planet can support something like a billion people, maybe two billion, depending on how much liberty and how much material consumption you want to have."

"If you want more liberty, and more consumption, you have to have fewer people. And conversely, you can have more people. I mean, we could even have eight or nine billion, probably if we have a very strong dictatorship."
