Oil and gas revenues to the Russian budget have doubled

Budget revenues from oil and gas extraction fees rose 90 per cent last month from a year earlier to nearly 1.31 trillion rubles ($14.1 billion), the Finance Ministry said. Taxes on oil and petroleum products, which accounted for more than 86% of total hydrocarbon revenues last month, contributed the most to the growth, according to Bloomberg News calculations.

The increase in budget revenues followed a rise in the price of Urals crude, Russia's former main export mark. In March 2023, it averaged $47.85 per barrel after sanctions were imposed. A year later, its price has risen to an average of $68.34 a barrel, according to Bloomberg calculations based on data from Argus Media Ltd.

Obviously, the real cost of oil is higher, given the same data from Goldman Sachs and Platts, according to which three weeks ago the discount between Urals and Brent was no more than $4-5 per barrel.

Oil production tax receipts rose 88% to RUB803bn in March as the country gradually increased the levy while at the same time cutting export duties with a view to abolishing them completely from this year.
