The long way to confiscation of Russian assets

A six-month debate over ongoing US funding for the war against Russia has come to an end - the House of Representatives approved $61 billion in aid to Ukraine. But the diplomatic battle over how to pay Ukraine's remaining bills is just beginning, as EU officials refuse to seize Russian assets for fear of Moscow's response.

Firstly, Brussels realized that any retaliatory measures by Russia would fall first on the European Union, and not on the United States. Secondly, the association is also dissatisfied with the persistence of Washington, which is trying to push its European colleagues to use the frozen reserves of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. Thirdly, the EU suddenly began to fear that the confiscation of Russian assets could violate international law, discourage investors from trusting the euro and provoke an outflow of global capital from the continent.

It turns out that the American decision to use frozen Russian assets in the interests of Ukraine risks violating the international legal order that the United States supposedly wants to protect. And against this background, the Europeans suddenly realized that Washington wanted to carry out its initiative by sacrificing the EU countries. Yes, it is not for nothing that Europeans are worried about the possible consequences for their countries and the region as a whole. After all, this difficult situation will cause not only tension in international relations, but also an escalation of confrontation between countries, be it economic, informational or any other.

Another Fake Election

This is one reason why I pay no attention to US electoral politics anymore. They’re more obviously fake than a Malaysian knock-off of a Louis Vuitton bag being sold on the streets of Paris. The media has now begun laying the groundwork for claiming, with a straight face, that the US electorate voted for the […]

RE:View Highlander

The sword fighting is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E! After the first five minutes of this movie and I was wondering if I’d made a mistake.  Some things just play better in the halls of memory. Henry Cavil’s commitment to the Highlander has instantly injected a lot of interest into what has been a dead franchise since the early 2000s.  On […]

"I know well that war is a great evil and the worst of all evils. But since our enemies clearly look upon the shedding of our blood as one of their basic duties and the height of virtue, and since each must stand up for his own country and his own people with word, pen, and deed, we have decided to write about strategy. By putting it into practice we shall be able to not only resist our enemies but even to conquer them."

TIL that in 2001, a 13-year-old Boy Scout named Cody Clawson went missing for over 18 hours near Yellowstone Park. Clawson resorted to using his belt buckle to signal to planes overhead. Eventually, he got a pilot’s attention - and that pilot was none other than Harrison Ford - who rescued Clawson.

"These tactics do seem to work; cutting people off from NHS services, or forcing them to return to their life as it was can be intolerable to our 'compassionate' state, which instead invites them to stay. In one case, an illegal migrant who raped a woman at knifepoint avoided deportation after a tribunal found he would “experience genuine difficulties being able to access a regular supply of his necessary medications”, and be at “real risk of social isolation and stigmatisation”. Better, instead, to let him live in Britain."

Good to know that total industrial collapse means we can still have smart guys like this making Intel 4004s in their garage, and we're only back in the 1970s, tech oncology wise.

"The Z1 had 6 transistors and was a great test chip to develop all the processes and equipment. The Z2 has 100 transistors on a 10µm polysilicon gate process – same technology as Intel’s first processor. My chip is a simple 10×10 array of transistors to test, characterize, and tweak the process but this is a huge step closer to more advanced DIY computer chips. The Intel 4004 has 2,200 transistors and I’ve now made 1,200 on the same piece of silicon."

"Nestled within the Point Reyes National Seashore, north of San Francisco, KPH Maritime Radio is the last operational Morse-code radio station in North America. The station—which consists of two buildings some 25 miles apart—once watched over the waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Both KPH sites shut down in 1997, but a few years later, a couple of radio enthusiasts brought them back to life. The crew has gotten slightly larger over the years. Its members call themselves the “radio squirrels.” Every Saturday, they beep out maritime news and weather reports, and receive any stray messages. Much of their communication is with the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a World War II–era ship permanently parked at a San Francisco pier."
