How Genghis Khan’s MITTENS Strangled Darwin

One of the reasons I occasionally find it profitable to engage with anklebiters is that they help me get a handle on what I need to do to bridge the communication gap with normal individuals. No offense, but I often can’t tell the difference between the average midwit and the average retard, or determine precisely […]

When you've lost longtime columnist, Michael Shermer, because you're too woke, you know it's bad.
"At the same time, SciAm dramatically ramped up its social-justice coverage. The magazine would soon publish a flurry of articles with noscripts such as “Modern Mathematics Confronts Its White, Patriarchal Past” and “The Racist Roots of Fighting Obesity.” The death of the twentieth century’s most acclaimed biologist was the hook for “The Complicated Legacy of E. O. Wilson,” an opinion piece arguing that Wilson’s work was “based on racist ideas,” without quoting a single line from his large published canon. At least those pieces had some connection to scientific topics, though. In 2021, SciAm published an opinion essay, “Why the Term ‘JEDI’ Is Problematic for Describing Programs That Promote Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.” The article’s five authors took issue with the effort by some social-justice advocates to create a cute new label while expanding the DEI acronym to include “Justice.” The Jedi knights of the Star Wars movies are “inappropriate mascots for social justice,” the authors argued, because they are “prone to (white) saviorism and toxically masculine approaches to conflict resolution (violent duels with phallic light sabers, gaslighting by means of ‘Jedi mind tricks,’ etc.).” What all this had to do with science was anyone’s guess."

"Compared to men, women are less pro-free speech and more pro-censorship. Within academia itself, they are more left-wing, more inclined toward activism, and less inclined toward dispassionate inquiry. And they’re disproportionately represented in disciplines like Race and Gender Studies. It’s important to note, of course, that this is Not All Women! I’m only talking about averages: some men are pro-censorship than most women; and some women are more pro-free speech than the vast majority of men. Nonetheless, the differences do exist (at least in the Anglosphere)."

TIL that the reason printers refuse to print without yellow ink is because they print a Machine Identification Code on every page, leaving a unique microscopic pattern of yellow dots that say what the serial number and model of the printer is, allowing the documents to be traced back to the owner.

🇺🇲 There are rumors among US Democrats that at the convention in August 2024, Biden will “make a grand gesture” and withdraw his candidacy from the presidential election.

According to Der Spiegel, he will propose to nominate former first lady Michelle Obama instead.

This possibility is being discussed so seriously in Washington that the Democratic Party included Michelle Obama in its public opinion polls, the newspaper notes.

The American media wrote back in September that many supporters of the US Democratic Party would like to see Michelle Obama as a candidate.

A South Korean fusion reactor just hit a milestone by running plasma at a whopping 100 million degrees Celsius for 48 seconds – that’s seven times hotter than the Sun! This breakthrough moves us closer to harnessing nuclear fusion, mimicking the energy of stars for a cleaner, limitless power source.

The secret to this success? Upgrading the reactor’s divertor to tungsten, allowing it to withstand extreme heat without reacting with the plasma. This led to another achievement: maintaining plasma in an efficient “H-mode” for 102 seconds. South Korea aims to push this to 300 seconds by 2026, a bold step towards sustainable energy.
Here’s to future breakthroughs in powering our world of @science! 🚀
