Nollet’s “electric boy” experiment has a boy hanging from insulating silk ropes and given an electric charge. A woman is encouraged to bend forward and poke the boy’s nose, to get an electric shock herself.

The scene now shifts to Europe where Abbe Jean-Antoine Nollet picked up on Demainbray’s experiments and tried some of his own. He was also a showman who made a fortune out of the electrical divertissements he devised for the French aristocracy, most famously the electric boy. Nollet also experimented with a whole range of techniques on a wide range of living things including seeds and plants which reported to the French Academy of Sciences in 1748. and which he wrote up in several books. Germination of seeds was several days quicker but the resultant plants weaker.

"These alternatives to energy, wind and solar, actually destroy plant life."

Geologist, Prof. Ian Plimer, dispels the myth that wind turbines and solar panels are in any way "green" or "environmentally-friendly".

"Solar panels leak out cadmium telluride, they leak out lead. These go into the soils. That's left there, it doesn't leach out. When we get rid of solar panels, we leave a huge environmental disaster behind. And these are areas which later we might want to use for growing food."

"In the case of wind turbines, they pollute very large areas with extraordinarily dangerous chemicals, and instead of trying to dispose of these wind turbine blades, we bury them... There is no industry at all where we can recycle these."

Geologist, Prof. Ian Plimer: "Carbon dioxide in the past has been much, much higher than now. We're currently at 0.04%. For most of geological time, it was about 20%."

"And during that geological time when we had high carbon dioxide, we had three of the six great ice ages. So clearly carbon dioxide wasn't driving runaway global warming."

"We are actually dangerously low. And if we continue to follow that long-term geological trend, we will find that plants will die... We are currently at just over 0.04% carbon dioxide. That's not enough for plants to thrive. They like about two or three times that amount."

Elon Musk tells Leonardo DiCaprio why—in order to "transition the whole world to sustainable energy"—governments need to impose a carbon tax.

"The scientific fact of the matter is we are unavoidably headed towards some level of harm. So the sooner we can take action, the less harm will result."

"And if government sets the rules to favour sustainable energy, we can get there really quickly... And the only way to do that is basically with a carbon tax."

TIL on Station Island in Ireland, St. Patrick was reputed to have found a cave that was a literal entrance into Purgatory. For hundreds of years, pilgrims travelled to the island and would spend the night in the cave, many of whom later emerged with fantastical tales of what they'd seen inside.

80 years ago today, Allied forces from the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Canada stormed the beaches at Normandy.

This attack initiated Operation Overlord, the invasion of France. On D-Day, Allied forces suffered more than 15,000 casualties, including some 4,500 killed. By the time Overlord was finished, on August 30, this number would grow, with some 226,000 wounded and 55,000 killed. But the Allies had liberated France, and in the process captured 200,000 German troops, and killed or wounded another 200,000.

One of the untold stories about Operation Overlord is the role played by the Soviet Army in securing the Allied victory. Two major Soviet offensives were launched in support of Operation Overlord, designed to pin down German forces on the Eastern Front, where more than 60% of German troops were fighting), preventing the Germans from diverting forces to reinforce their troops in France. These two offensives—Bagration and Lvov-Sandomeirz—together killed 520,000 German troops, wounding another 300,000, while capturing more than 192,000, for a total of more than 1 million German casualties.

But the loss to the Soviets was grievous: nearly 250,000 dead, and another 800,000 wounded.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the battle that began the campaign that liberated France and, ultimately, helped bring about the defeat of Nazi Germany.

But we must never forget the role the Soviet Army played in making this victory, and indeed the victory over Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich, possible. Without the sacrifice of the Soviet Army, the Allie’s invasion of France would have proven to be a much more costly campaign.

Which is why, on this anniversary, the failure of the successors to the great alliance that defeated Nazi Germany to invite representatives of the Russian Federation to mark this solemn occasion is particularly egregious.

The cemeteries that contain the remains of those American soldiers who gave their lives in the cause of freedom 80 years ago would be much larger than they already are without the similar massive sacrifice of life by the Russian people we once called friend and ally.

When Piracy is Mandatory
