To clarify, the Brittany American Cemetery event went off two days ago without a hitch. Yesterday's planned event at the Normandy American Cemetery had to be abruptly cancelled due to a last minute change in plans by Biden.

"Amid this are a few wrinkles. Almost none of the jobs added in town lately are unionised and so lack the generous benefits — including days off for hunting season — that GM furnished. Wages are another matter. Even today, Otterstein estimates, fewer than a thousand people in town are earning around the $28 an hour that GM was paying back when the plant closed. And while wages have been rising recently, inflation has been tempering the practical value of such gains, the way it has around the country."

"The official history of the bank, written in 1950 but posted online for the first time on Tuesday, reveals how we betrayed Czechoslovakia – not just with the infamous Munich agreement of September 1938, which allowed the Nazis to annex the Sudetenland, but also in London, where Montagu Norman, the eccentric but ruthless governor of the Bank of England agreed to surrender gold owned by the National Bank of Czechoslovakia."

How six months before WWII Britain gave Hitler $9-million in gold (that belonged to another country)
There is more to the tale of Czechoslovak gold being stolen by Germany than the Bank of England’s embarrassment – the Bank for International Settlements actually financed Hitler’s war machine, says Adam LeBor.

🚢 Houthis’ Red Sea blockade makes Russia’s Northern Sea Route attractive to desperate West
With the US and Britain proving unable to dislodge the Houthis from their strongholds or stop the militia from attacking Israeli-linked, American and British vessels in the Red and Arabian Seas, commercial shippers have increasingly eyed Russia’s Northern Sea Route as an attractive potential alternative, a leading mainstream US news magazine has reported.
The article ‘discovered’ what Russian officials and media have been saying for years – that the 5,600 km Northern Sea Route is the shortest maritime route between Europe and Asia, and can shave 8,000 km or more of distance, and 40-60 percent in time, off shipments, compared to traditional Europe-Asia routes through the presently troubled waters in the Middle East.
Unfortunately for the West, there’s a catch: 70 percent of the Arctic, including virtually the entire length of the Arctic portion of the route, passes through Russian waters. “Ships wanting to use the route must secure the Russians’ permission and pay them transit fees. Given current relations between many Western countries and Russia amid the Ukraine war, that poses an obvious challenge,” the magazine lamented.

“The surging costs and fear of getting hit by Houthi drones and missiles have led some shippers to consider the Arctic as an alternative, as melting ice begins opening new potential on the so-called Northern Sea Route,” Foreign Policy wrote.

“The ability to slash some 5,000 miles off a ship’s journey would mean much faster travel times – a major plus in today’s world of online retail and next-day delivery,” FP said.

After a tumultuous trip where the band had to adjust to last-minute cancellations and schedule changes, the Jacksonville State Marching Southerners delivered an outstanding performance at Sainte-Mère-Église yesterday. I found their chorale presentation of the traditional hymn, "I'll Fly Away," punctuated by an airplane flying overhead, particularly moving (time stamp: 9:35).

A message from Jacksonville State Director of Bands, Dr. Bodiford:
Dear Parents,
As our time in the Normandy area and our performances begin to come to a close, I wanted to take a moment to express my profound admiration for our band students during our France trip thus far. These students never cease to amaze me. One thing that we “band folks” are taught from our early years is how to be flexible, work as a team, lend a helping hand to others, and how to deal with last-minute changes. Our current Marching Southerners exemplify those characteristics.
From flight delays to missing luggage and instruments, to a canceled performance which caused last-minute schedule changes, they have been the ultimate professionals. So many of them are mature far beyond their years. When a problem arises, most of them are very are eager to become a part of the solution instead of worsening the situation. When they wear their uniform, they strive to put their best foot forward, making a positive impression on those who see them. Their performances have been heartfelt and full of passion.
One behalf of the entire staff, although we are their teachers and strive to set a good example for them, we often find ourselves striving to be more like them! Thank you, parents, for teaching them how to be "good people." I hope that quality remains in them throughout their lives and they pass them on to others!
