"What had started as a war against French expansionism in 1337 ended with one quarter of France’s territory being partitioned and annexed by Edward III in 1360. In the last stage of the war during the 1420s, Paris was a bastion of English rule in France, governed by an English regent."

❄️ Russia continues to push forward with the rapid renewal and expansion of its icebreaker fleet. In addition to commissioning three new nuclear icebreakers in the last four years, with three more currently under construction, Russia’s first armed combat icebreaker, Ivan Papanin, is now headed for open water factory trials.
❄️ Ivan Papanin was laid down in 2017 and is expected to join Russia’s Northern Fleet by the end of 2024. Two additional vessels of the type are under construction for the naval units of the country’s border patrol.
❄️ Unlike nuclear icebreaking vessels operated by state-owned Atomflot, which primarily serve to escort merchant vessels through the icy waters of the Northern Sea Route, the combat icebreakers are equipped with offensive capabilities. They include the 76mm AK-176MA gun and pre-installed launchers for Uran anti-ship and Kalibr-NK cruise missiles.
❄️ Capable of breaking through five and a half feet of ice it will be able to access most of the Arctic Ocean unassisted, except during the depth of winter. Its capabilities are comparable to Norway’s Svalbard icebreaking patrol vessel, though the Russian counterpart will be much heavier armed.

I mentioned before that there is something fascinating about the eternal back and forth of offensive and defensive technologies & the arms race between things that want to make you explode and things that want to protect you from that.
There's this insidious Russian mining system — NVU, "Okhota" ("Hunt"), and its successor, the NVU-2. The original iteration was first tested back during the Soviet-Afghan war, I think. It's basically a semi-analog control unit that sequentially detonates the charges in the required sectors: meaning, you put up a bunch of anti-personnel mines, and each time someone walks by only one of them goes off, so the area is still mined and dangerous.
The Ukrainians have come up with a countermeasure — the "Artemida" system. It is dropped from a UAV, embedded into the ground and by design initiates the detonation sequence of NVU and NVU-2 devices by sending a seismic signal into the ground that simulates human movement.
It kills and maims people — but technology is sometimes a true marvel. Some clever contraption against another clever contraption.
P.S.
The "Artemida" device reminds me of the sandworm-summoning thumpers from Dune, and, funnily enough, the previous, non-technological measure to avoid the NVU system was to walk with irregular steps or move like an animal; that is, to do the Fremen sand walk, basically.

"The biotic theory is that oil and gas drilled out of the earth come from the remains of plants and animals trapped underground millions of years ago. These ‘fossil fuels’ took aeons to form and we are using them up far faster than they can be replenished.
"This ‘fossil fuel’ theory is, however, just that – a theory. There are many features of the fossil-origin theory which still apparently puzzle some scientists. So, what if the whole theory is wrong?
"The abiotic theory is an opposing view that has substantial evidence to back it up. This theory goes back centuries and includes as its prominent champions Dimitri Mendeleev, best known for inventing the periodic table."

"Giant international fusion project is in big trouble" - Daniel Clergy, Science org, 03JUL2024
>ITER operations delayed to 2034, with energy-producing reactions expected 5 years later
>Dreamed up in 1980s, ITER collaboration came together in 2006. Construction began in 2010 with contracts spread across all member states. Operations were expected to start a decade later. The project relies on a doughnut-shaped reactor, called a tokamak, in which magnetic fields contain a plasma of hydrogen nuclei hot enough to fuse and release energy. Particle beams and microwaves heat plasma to 150 million degrees Celsius—10 times the temperature of the Sun’s core—while a few meters away the superconducting magnets must be cooled to –269°C, a few degrees above absolute zero.
>After 5 years, operators will fire up short fusion bursts of less than a minute with the more potent deuterium-tritium fuel, which will give ITER a shot at its stated goal of generating 10 times more power than it consumes.
