"What does an understanding of the thinking of men like Maxwell, Heaviside, and Hertz have to offer you? Exactly that: “…the structure of ideas upon which [the equations] were based by their originator” and “how to move about in it.” That insight is invaluable if you want to understand the subject instead of merely playing mathematical games with it."

TIL the world's first hard drive, the IBM 350, was introduced in 1956. It was leased to companies for $37,600/month (adjusted to 2024), weighed one ton, and held 3.75 MB, about the size of a small PDF file.

The Library of Congress website has an engraving from 1653. It shows a priest and a map of Tartaria, China and India.

As the official sources say, "Tartaria is one of the most famous mythological countries, imaginary territories."

So imaginary, in fact, that merchants, travelers, and ambassadors of faith traveled to it in crowds, and its maps were detailed to the smallest detail.

"Students studying a module on Geoffrey Chaucer at the University of Nottingham have been issued a trigger warning for ‘expressions of Christian faith’ in his famous Canterbury Tales.

"The warning is provided to students studying the Chaucer and His Contemporaries module, according to a report in the Mail obtained under Freedom of Information laws.

"The university explained that the warning was introduced due to the text's depiction of Christianity from a 14th-century perspective and its historical context."

Robin Williams killed himself in 2014, supposedly because of simple "depression." The poor man had a chemical war going on inside his head that no doctor could diagnose until the autopsy. God bless his widow for writing this article and may it help a lot of people.

"Military analysts and Nato officials have cast doubt on the accuracy of reports that North Korean troops are involved in combat in eastern Ukraine. Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte said on Wednesday that the defence alliance had no “definitive” information on this matter.

"The White House said on Tuesday it could not independently confirm the reports of North Korean troops fighting on behalf of Russia but “those reports are concerning to us”, according to National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby."

"Construction of the ITER tokamak began in 2010, and in May 200 the 1,250-tonne cryostat base was installed at the 42-hectare site. The latest news from ITER is a plan to build a more complete machine than was initially planned, with achievement of full magnetic energy by 2036 and the start of the deuterium-tritium operation phase by 2039. Expect new information at the ITER Council meeting this November.

Armed with nothing but a laptop and a working moral compass, activist Laila Mickelwait forced the site to remove 80 per cent of its content. Takedown is the story of how she did it. Part memoir, part gripping crime thriller, Takedown describes in forensic detail how Micklewait forced Pornhub to admit it had been knowingly profiting — along with some of the world’s biggest payment providers including Mastercard and Visa — from child abuse, rape and human trafficking.

Looks like after 5.5y, s newspaper has been forced into a rather lukewarm public apology to two doctors who they maligned horribly about statin drugs (do not take them).

While it’s obviously better than not getting an apology, I think it’s a bitter harvest. Few people have the fortitude and ability to fund and / or fund raise the necessary money.

Even having these admirable qualities, justice delayed is, for me, justice denied.

Best wishes
Mike
