"Unless something significant changes, I’m skeptical that the decline in government funding will be reversed. Personally, I would prefer some version of private support—I think it encourages better research and accountability—but, whatever your preference, it’s extremely doubtful that we can reverse this trend by trying to manufacture a culture of celebrity around scientists.
