"Project Alchemy’s proposed schemes spanned every conceivable field of warfare, from cyber attacks to “discreet operations” to outright terrorism. The secret cell even put forward a plan to “aggressively pursue” and “dismantle” independent media outlets – including The Grayzone – through an aggressive campaign of legal harassment and online censorship, so they “would be forced to close.” The incendiary blueprints were fed to the highest levels of the British state and national security structure, where they were apparently well-received."

TIL about Philo Farnsworth, a farm boy from Idaho who, at just 14, conceived the idea for electronic television while plowing a field. Despite no formal training, his unexpected innovation laid the foundation for the technology that transformed communication and entertainment worldwide.

"What if we were willing to see poetry as a science, wedding contemplation and craft?

"That would be something to celebrate, don’t you think?!"

"Little did I realize that a post I threw up on X would cause Scientific American to shove editor Laura Helmut out the door for hateful post-election comments, action now ricocheting across social media and multiple news outlets. “I've decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief,” Helmuth posted on Bluesky, the social media club for liberals. “I'm going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching).”

"Pretty much every news account misreports the events that led to Helmuth’s departure, alleging Helmuth’s scalping for appalling behavior—she called members of Gen X “fucking fascists”—is a political win for “conservatives” or “Trump supporters.” These stories at the New York Times, Guardian, and NPR serve as the latest examples of how lost and divorced from reality too many journalists remain from the American public and anything that approximates actual journalism."

"Genre expectations, what makes a hero, morality, purpose, and the meaning of good and evil, have all been bungled by the big dogs in charge and were done so long ago. If we want to move past them we're going to have to go even further back while simultaneously pulling even further ahead into uncharted waters.

"We are close to the fringes of a new Golden Age. In fact, we are so close I can just barely see it over the horizon coming ahead. But we aren't going to get there with these old failed roadmaps. It is time to throw them out the window and leave them behind.

"Keep awake and we'll get there eventually. I just hope we can stop with all of these detours so we can get there sooner."

I've taught at a New England prep school for nearly 20 years. Families have been laser focused on top tier colleges, most of which are up here.

Except for a very few exceptional candidates, this has changed.

Dramatically.

There is another "great migration" happening, as a steady flow of middle and upper middle-class children of the meritocratic class have decided to go to college in the spirit of normalcy.

10 years ago a kid or two went south. Maybe

Now many are are headed down to the football part of the country. It'll be interesting to see how this winds up in a decade. These kids are not in a mood to tolerate NE weirdness anymore, especially since they've figured out that they are not wanted. They seem to want something normal.

"In response to recent comments made by Haaretz publisher Amos Schocken referring to Palestinian terrorists as “freedom fighters,” the government announces that it is severing all ties with the left-wing newspaper.

"Communications Ministers Shlomo Karhi’s office states that the cabinet unanimously approves his proposal to cut off all advertising and announcements of government tenders both in the printed edition and on the Haaretz website.

"The resolution states that while the government supports a free press and freedom of expression, it “will not accept a situation in which the publisher of an official newspaper calls for the imposition of sanctions and against it and supports its enemies in the middle of a war.”"

This is a much needed comprehensive historical survey. Our intelligence apparatus was crafted to make the world safe for America by neutralizing communism. Lately however, that same intelligence apparatus has been working to neutralize populism to make America safe for the intelligence apparatus.

Fascinating and highly recommended.

"Unless something significant changes, I’m skeptical that the decline in government funding will be reversed. Personally, I would prefer some version of private support—I think it encourages better research and accountability—but, whatever your preference, it’s extremely doubtful that we can reverse this trend by trying to manufacture a culture of celebrity around scientists. Rather, I think we should deal with the core issues of science’s PR problem, and make Americans once again feel connected to the enterprise of science. Then, maybe, we can make science in America great again."
