TIL that in 1926, Nikola Tesla predicted modern cell phones. Tesla described a future "when wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth" in a way that allows humans "to communicate with one another instantly irrespective of distance" with the clarity of a face-to-face meeting using a device.

2024: The Year the Masks Came Off
Simplicius offers a cogent summary of the recently-concluded year. 2025 saw a remarkable and precipitous decline of the West into tyranny and illiberalism. Given the bizarre coordinated nature of every Western nation’s mirrored crack downs on fundamental freedoms like freedom of speech, the total delegitimization of democracy and elections, the absolute spiteful disgust that our […]

"On January 1, 2025, thousands of copyrighted works from 1929 will enter the US public domain, along with sound recordings from 1924. They will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon.[2] 2025 marks a milestone: all of the books, films, songs, and art published in the 1920s will now be public domain. The literary highlights from 1929 include The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, and A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf. In film, Mickey Mouse speaks his first words, the Marx Brothers star in their first feature film, and legendary directors from Alfred Hitchcock to John Ford made their first sound films. From comic strips, the original Popeye and Tintin characters will enter the public domain. Among the newly public domain compositions are Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Ravel’s Bolero, Fats Waller’s Ain’t Misbehavin’, and the musical number Singin’ in the Rain. Below is just a handful of the works that will be in the US public domain in 2025.[3] To find more material from 1929, you can visit the Catalogue of Copyright Entries."

Estonia plans to request NATO to deploy a "deterrence fleet" in the Baltic Sea following the cutting of a submarine cable, Prime Minister Kristen Michal announced.
Michal stated that consultations on the matter would take place under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows member states to discuss threats to their security, territorial integrity, or political independence.
"Damage to critical infrastructure is becoming increasingly common. This recurring problem means countries must enhance their infrastructure protection, improve ship interception capabilities, and ensure faster identification of those responsible," Michal said, emphasizing the need for stronger monitoring of potential threats.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte affirmed the alliance's support for Estonia. "NATO stands with its allies and condemns any attacks on critical infrastructure. We are closely monitoring the investigations by Estonia and Finland and are ready to provide additional assistance," Rutte stated.

Forwarded from J.R.R. Tolkien
“Kings built tombs more splendid than the houses of the living and counted the names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons. Childless lords sat in aged halls musing on heraldry or in high cold towers asking questions of the stars. And so the kingdom of Gondor sank into ruin, the line of kings failed, the white tree withered and the rule of Gondor was given over to lesser men. ”

"An 81-year-old Montana man was sentenced on Monday to six months in federal prison for illegally using tissue and testicles from large sheep hunted in central Asia and the US to create hybrid sheep for captive trophy hunting in Texas and Minnesota.
"The US district court judge Brian Morris said he struggled to come up with a sentence for Arthur “Jack” Schubarth of Vaughn, Montana. He said he weighed Schubarth’s age and lack of a criminal record with a sentence that would deter anyone else from trying to “change the genetic makeup of the creatures” on the Earth."
