FUN FACT: The first person to introduce smallpox inoculation to England was Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, a fabulist and serial adulteress, famous in literary circles for befriending Alexander Pope and then mocking him ruthlessly when he declared his love for her. Unsurprisingly, she spent her later years writing her estranged husband about their son's gambling debts. She had had that same son, Edward, inoculated when he was not yet five years old, the "first English person to undergo the operation." In case you were wondering where the English-speaking world contracted its fascination with vaccines: they got it via Lady Mary who learned it from the Ottomans.
