TIL Crispin Glover, who played George McFly in Back to the Future, was replaced with actor Jeffrey Weissman in the sequel. They used shots of Glover from Back to the Future to make it more convincing. Glover was unhappy at this and sued, which resulted in the adoption of stricter rules by the SAG.

I'm researching the growth of propaganda and PR surrounding the Einstein publicity campaign and came across a gem. John T. Flynn wrote "Edward L. Bernays: The Science of Ballyhoo," The Atlantic Monthly, May 1932, pp. 562-571
Some quotes:

"He [Bernays] creates ‘events and circumstances’ which newspapers are compelled to notice as news."

"Bernays’s field, it will be seen, is the psychology of the crowd. He is fond of quoting Le Bon. The French writer popularized the theory that the crowd mind is less intelligent than the minds of the individuals who compose it, and that emotional states are contagious."

"But Bernays fell to analyzing philosophically what he was doing, and when the war ended he felt himself to be in possession of a powerful instrument which could be used with rich results for business. His success has been extraordinary... It is obvious that the monetary rewards for the kind of work he does are very large."

"One cannot talk long to Bernays without learning that the most direct way to reach the mind of the herd is through its leaders — its group leaders. Bernays, of course, deals with mental groups — groups arranged according to intelligence, tastes, prejudices, ambitions, emotions."

"I expressed some apprehension about all this propaganda to Mr. Bernays. The producing and selling groups in society are all highly organized and effectively implemented to operate against the consumer. The consumer, on his side, is utterly disorganized and helpless. He must depend solely upon his reason, weak and fallible as it is. Now comes Propaganda pouring down upon him noiselessly and subtly its countless powerful impressions to rob him even of his reason.

"‘You are full of terrors,’ replied Mr. Bernays, ‘about the multitude of influences which propagandists shoot at the Mass Mind. I think you overlook the fact that if there were no such manipulators of public opinion the Mass Mind would still be at the mercy of quite as many influences; would be pulled about by quite as many forces — the fortuitous and whimsical forces of life and chance."

"The invention, however, is like dynamite. It can be used to excavate a subway or to destroy a town. There is a grave social danger lurking in the discovery which Mr. Bernays has
made, that the Mass Mind is to be controlled through its group leaders."

"We have but to put a label on a thing and see that it is set loose in the proper place, and our great, interesting, and interested country will do the rest."

"The manner in which he has exploited this field makes one wonder, however, what defensive mechanism society can erect to protect itself against such powerful and subtle forces. Mr. Bernays has written extensively on the subject •— two books and many magazine articles — and he has laid stress on the necessity of developing an ethical standard with reference to propaganda. Even after that has been effected, if it can be effected, much will still remain to be done for the public itself. I do not pretend to know what it may be. But I throw the problem out as one well worth the attention of the thoughtful student of our complex society."

It might start with gasoline but the panic will be on for everything.

And Los Angeles was so strongly designed around car transportation that with a fuel shortage, people who end up stranded will be in big trouble.

NEW: Total damage from the Los Angeles fires is estimated to reach $150 Billion.

AccuWeather has increased their estimate for the damage and economic loss, saying total damage is expected to be $135-$150 billion.

The estimate was a sharp increase from their previous estimate of $57 billion.

More than 10,000 homes and other structures have been burned down.

JP Morgan predicts insured losses of $20 billion and uninsured losses of over $100 billion.

“This will probably be the largest number of people uninsured or underinsured during a massive catastrophic event like this,” Diane Delaney, executive director of Private Risk Management Association, said to the New York Post.

“The point of insurance is to be there at the time of claim, and if that’s going to bankrupt them, they’re going to pull out of the state.”

"The karma part of this is obvious. They rationed the water in the city, stripped civic services, hired the incompetent. This speaks to a larger issue, one which has afflicted every town and city in North America. The catastrophic flooding, water shortages, fires, they are all preventable, and many of them are deliberate, to break infrastructure, to drive people off the land and finally and most importantly, surreptitiously remove property rights and agency from individuals."

🇸🇾Syria's new government is changing its education system, with critics saying it is trying to push an Islamist agenda on schoolchildren in a country that has long been secular.

The Financial Times writes about this.

Let us recall that the Sunni Islamist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham came to power in Syria.

Textbooks are removing references to ousted President Bashar al-Assad and his late father Hafez, who ruled for 50 years.

But many were alarmed that references to pre-Islamic deities and even the word “deities” were removed, and criticism of the Ottoman Empire was curtailed (recall that the groups that seized power in Damascus are allegedly linked to Turkey - Ed.)

However, new interpretations of the Koran have appeared. For example, in the Islamic studies textbook for the first grade, an interpretation of a Koranic verse appeared that mentions “those who deserve [Allah’s] wrath” and “the lost” as a reference to “Christians and Jews.”

In a first-grade science textbook, the words "the bounties of nature" were replaced with "the bounties of Allah," and in a 12th-grade history textbook, a sentence was removed that mentioned the mass execution of Arab nationalists in 1916 during the Ottoman Empire.

Also excluded were the text of the Syrian citizenship law, a section on the evolution of the vertebrate brain, and a mention of Zenobia, the famous pre-Islamic queen of the ancient city of Palmyra.

Global warming strikes again.
JUST IN - Britain has recorded its coldest January night in 15 years as temperatures drop below -18C and the freezing conditions continue.
But at least as English pensioners shiver and deal with frozen pipes, they will be comforted with the knowledge that their government has done all it could to help Ukrainians and Russians keep killing each other.

One of the reasons that the Pacific Palisades ran out of water so fast was that the Santa Ynez (Pacific Palisades) Reservoir had been emptied and closed for repairs... A city official says it had been closed for an indeterminate amount of time, and that it "had been closed for a while."
Turns out there was a rip in the cover that needed a repair - there was nothing wrong with the actual reservoir.
