For those of you who don't know, there are like three different Orthodox churches within Ukraine claiming to be the Church of Ukraine.

One of them, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) was established by Constantinople (who had no right to do it in the first place), one of them was the Kiev Patriarchate, and the third is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) which is the canonical one, and until just today was under the authority of Moscow.

For years now, the OCU and the UOC have been fighting each other, sometimes violently. I wonder what will happen now that both of them have declared independence from Moscow.

The Ukraine Deconstructed:

To understand the Ukraine war, you need to look at all four dimensions of this tragedy. It is simultaneously 1) a civil war, 2) a clash of ethnonationalisms, 3) an empire's attempt to reclaim its vital province, and 4) part of a struggle for global supremacy.

1) The Ukraine war is many ways a classic European civil war in which people of the same blood, who speak the same language, have the same culture and belong to the same religion, kill each other over political issues and social values. Among the Russian forces fighting in Ukraine, as well as among the war supporters in Russia, there are many people of Ukrainian origin. Similarly, there are a lot of ethnic Russians who are fighting for the Kiev government. The closest analogy is probably the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, with Putin as modern-day Franco who embodies conservative, anti-revolutionary forces anti-thetical to post-modern Western liberal-socialism.

2) It is also a clash of Russian and Ukrainian ethno-nationalisms. This war may be the culmination of a long conflict of two close Slavic nationalisms that began in the 19th century. Russian and Ukrainian nationalisms were constructed in the 19th century, following the patterns of European romantic nationalism. Poet Taras Shevchenko and politician (and one-time Nazi collaborator) Stepan Bandera are the two main icons of Ukrainian ethno-nationalism.

3) Moscow’s “special military operation” in Ukraine is an attempt to take back control over a vital part of the empire. Without Ukraine, the great Eurasian Empire (a.k.a. Muscovy, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation) is significantly diminished geo-economically and becomes vulnerable geopolitically.

4) Finally, the Ukraine war is a proxy war against Russia, and indirectly against China, America’s two great-power competitors. Through waging war in Ukraine, the US-led West seeks to bleed, and perhaps even ruin, Russia while sending a warning to China. The Ukraine war is also being used as a means to mobilize and consolidate the West under US leadership. The confluence of these four factors made a war over Ukraine almost inevitable. The stakes are high. The war will continue, with more or less intensity, until NATO disintegrates and the globalists are consumed by their own fire 🔥☠️🇺🇸🌎
