TIL that The Piltdown man, found by Charles Dawson in England from 1910–1912 and thought to be a key human-ape link, was revealed in 1953–54 as a hoax made from a modern human skull, an orangutan jaw, and a chimpanzee tooth, deliberately faked to trick scientists.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pressuring the U.S. to block F-35 sales to Turkey.
🇮🇱🗯🇺🇸🚫✈️➡️🇹🇷📰 Middle East Eye | Israel's Netanyahu lobbying US against F-35 sale to Turkey, sources say | Netanyahu looks to maintain Israel's qualitative military edge over Turkey's air force with tensions in Syria rising | April 7, 2025:

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been lobbying US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to block the sale of F-35 warplanes to Turkey, citing concerns over Ankara’s growing influence in Syria, three sources, including two senior western officials, told Middle East Eye.

Netanyahu raised the F-35 issue during multiple calls with Rubio in March and April, the two western officials said. A third source familiar with the matter confirmed that Netanyahu had pressed Rubio on the arms sale.

Netanyahu has privately said he will push Trump against the F-35 sale but has yet to discuss it with him. The Israeli leader will meet Trump at the White House on Monday, his second visit this year."

TIL When Savonarola, a fanatic friar, took control of Florence he harshly persecuted homosexuality. After his reign ended, people were eager to return to enjoying all the things he banned: one government official attending the friar's execution was quoted saying "thank God we can sodomise again!"

"A number of influential Thai businesses and public figures are pushing for the construction of a massive shipping canal across Thailand's south, which would be one of Asia's most ambitious infrastructure projects ever.

"Nikkei Asian Review recently reported on the proposed Kra Canal, an idea that has been around for decades, though no progress has ever been made on it. The hypothetical canal would cut a 135-kilometer swath across Thailand's Isthmus of Kra and connect the Pacific and Indian Oceans."

Your enemies held a pandemic planning exercise last week

Known only through a short press release, Exercise Polaris was a pandemic planning exercise held by the WHO 2-4 April 2025. More than 350 health emergency experts connected globally through this exercise. According to the WHO, it marked "a turning point in global pandemic readiness". Dr Soha Albayat from Qatar promised that "The foundation of our collaborative efforts is significantly stronger than in years past. We've moved beyond reactive measures, and are now proactively anticipating, aligning, and coordinating our cross-border emergency response plans."

The pandemic plotters promises " timely interventions" next time - i.e. faster, harder lockdowns, mass "testing" and more or less forced jabs.

"To secure that money, as the Thompson Committee would later report, the Clintons “pulled down all the barriers that would normally be in place to keep out illegal contributions, pressured policy makers, and left themselves open to strong suspicion that they were selling not only access to high-ranking officials, but policy as well.” Said the committee in summary, “Millions of dollars were raised in illegal contributions, much of it from foreign sources.”

"No source was more outrageous than People’s Liberation Army arms dealer Wang Jun. On February 6, 1996, Wang Jun finagled a cordial private coffee at the White House. The fact that he had cut arms deals with Chinese allies in places like Libya, Iran, Serbia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, did not faze the president. Clinton pal Charlie Trie had greased the Wang Jun meeting with a $50,000 payment."

TIL that Benjamin Franklin’s sharp lightning rods sparked political debates. He argued they were more effective, while King George III preferred blunt ones. The colonies’ adoption of Franklin’s design symbolized a scientific choice and a subtle rebellion against the King's preferences.

"A sunken 'pyramid' near Taiwan may rewrite everything we thought we knew about the ancient world.

"Sitting just 82 feet below sea level near the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, a mysterious object called the Yonaguni monument continues to stump and astonish researchers since its discovery in 1986.

"This giant structure with sharp-angled steps stands roughly 90 feet tall and appears to be made entirely of stone, leading many to believe it was man-made.

"However, tests of the stone show it to be over 10,000 years old, meaning that if a civilization built this pyramid by hand, it would have taken place before this region sank under water - more than 12,000 years ago."
