The Pope was 88 years old. The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (secular name), was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires (Argentina) to a family of Italian immigrants.

After training as a chemical engineer, he decided to take holy orders and entered the seminary in Buenos Aires. On March 11, 1958, Bergoglio entered the Jesuit monastic order.

On 28 February 1998, he became Archbishop of Buenos Aires. On 13 March 2013, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope under the name Francis. No other pope had ever had such a name.

The Pontiff has repeatedly advocated for peace in Ukraine and has held negotiations with Russian clergy.

For many years, Francis suffered from rheumatism and pneumonia.
