TIL that in the 1790s, France had a network of signalling towers that could send messages by writing symbols using giant mechanical arms on towers. They could send complex messages across the entire country in ~1 hour. These were precursors to electric telegraphs.

"The cartels realize that the judicial bench is the choke point. There are only a handful of judges in each locale, so controlling even one through plato or plomo makes a measurable difference. Control the judiciary, and you effectively control law enforcement. It’s not just a cartel thing, it’s an organized crime tactic. You can find similar examples in the 1980’s mafia and the 1930’s Chicago mobsters."

❗️Negotiations in London have started, and we are not ruling out any format that could lead to a ceasefire and, eventually, real peace, President Zelenskyy said.
“We insist on an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days.
Right now in the Dnipro region, doctors are treating those wounded this morning in a Russian FPV drone strike. It was an extremely cruel and deliberate act — a clear war crime.
Russians struck a bus in Marhanets carrying workers of a mining and processing plant. More than 40 people were injured, most of them women, with very serious wounds. Sadly, nine people were killed. My condolences go out to their families and loved ones.
Unfortunately, such Russian attacks on civilians with FPV drones are not rare. They even brag about it online, posting videos of the strikes.
The world must face this with clear eyes: if Russia uses this form of terror, other terrorists could follow their lead.
This is one reason why continued Russian aggression poses a global threat.
Ukraine continues to call for an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire. This was also the right proposal made by the United States on March 11.
Peace is absolutely possible — but only if Russia chooses to stop the killings.
We are also ready for an immediate ceasefire at least on civilian targets, and we have already declared this. This must be a shared priority with all our partners.”

Beginning on June 1, 2025, only members of ONE association, the Dutch Association of Journalists, will be able to create audiovisual reports of legal cases.
