The Cities That Appeared, and Then Disappeared

From 1851 to the early 20th century, World’s fairs rose in cities across the realm—massive expos said to showcase progress, invention, and civilization. But what they revealed looked less like innovation and more like memory: vast classical structures, domes, arches, columned halls stretching for acres. The 1893 Chicago Exposition alone covered over 600 acres with more than 200 monumental buildings—built, they said, in under two years.

Official accounts claimed the architecture was temporary, made from plaster and wood. But photographs tell another story. Stone-like finishes, detailed interiors, immense scale, and design far beyond what transitory construction should allow. People came to marvel, but also to be taught—to receive the official version of history, of invention, of what was new.

And when it ended, nearly all of it was demolished. Buried, burned, or erased. What’s left behind suggests these fairs weren’t simply built to celebrate the future—but to rewrite the past.

📈📉 There's an inverse correlation between the growth of education and the decline in innovation. The longer people spend in school, the less capable they are of thinking creatively.

Vortex Tunnel are often used in amusement parks to create an illusion of movement.

When the tunnel rotates, your brain receives conflicting signals from your senses, making it feel like the platform is spinning.

Russia has begun using new kamikaze drones that select targets and carry out strikes without operator involvement.

These drones can fly up to 100 km from the front line, are equipped with cameras and computer vision, operate without GPS, and independently decide when and where to strike.

They don't distinguish between military equipment and a civilian bus. Their gasoline engine only increases their operational range.

In essence, this is a weapon that "sees" and kills on its own.

TIL about Dr. Benjamin Rush who provided the Corps of Discovery with 600 "Dr. Rush's Bilious Pills," powerful laxatives containing 50% mercury, colloquially called "thunderclappers." The high mercury content provided a tracer that has allowed the Corps' campsites to be identified via soil testing.

WATCH: Dentist congressman instantly regrets challenging RFK Jr. on fluoride.

Rep. Mike Simpson: “We better put a lot more money into dental education because we’re going to need a whole lot more dentists [if we ban fluoride].”

The rebuttal was too easy for Kennedy.

RFK Jr.: “We now know that virtually all the benefit is from topical, and we can get that through mouthwashes. We can get through fluoridated toothpastes.”

Then he dropped the hammer:

“The National Toxicity Program issued a report in August, a meta review of all the science that now exists on fluoride, and showed a direct inverse correlation between fluoride exposure dose and lower IQ.”

“Which is an issue that we all have to be concerned with. We want high IQ kids right now,” Kennedy said.

"Froward," Mr. Wright? That must be a typo. "Contumacious?" Oh, it's a synonym for... froward.

His vocabulary needs to be registered as a lethal weapon. I appreciate the artistry in using both contiguously. I'd have never cracked open the dictionary for just "froward."

"Earlier this semester, an NYU professor told me how he had AI-proofed his assignments, only to have the students complain that the work was too hard. When he told them those were standard assignments, just worded so current AI would fail to answer them, they said he was interfering with their “learning styles.” A student asked for an extension, on the grounds that ChatGPT was down the day the assignment was due. Another said, about work on a problem set, “You’re asking me to go from point A to point B, why wouldn’t I use a car to get there?” And another, when asked about their largely AI-written work, replied, “Everyone is doing it.” Those are stories from a 15-minute conversation with a single professor."
