Cherokee Lore and Appalachian Mystery
Long before European settlers arrived in the Appalachian Mountains, the Cherokee told stories of a strange race known as the Moon-Eyed People—a mysterious, pale-skinned group who lived in the mountains but only came out at night.
According to Cherokee oral tradition:
They were described as small, bearded, white-skinned humanoids with large, round blue eyes that were overly sensitive to sunlight, hence the name "moon-eyed."
They were said to build stone structures and lived underground or in the shadows of the hills, venturing out only by moonlight.
These people were eventually driven out or defeated by the Cherokee, who regarded them as a prior, non-Indigenous race.
Historical Mentions:
Benjamin Smith Barton, an 18th-century American naturalist, wrote in 1797 about the Cherokee belief in these moon-eyed beings. He claimed they might have been an ancient Welsh colony, referencing a legend that Prince Madoc, a Welsh explorer, sailed to America in the 12th century.
This theory, though historically unsupported, merged European myth with Indigenous oral history.
Stone Forts and Ruins:
Some point to ancient stone walls and forts found in places like Fort Mountain, Georgia, as remnants of the Moon-Eyed People’s civilization. These structures are unlike traditional Cherokee construction and predate known Native activity.
Theories & Interpretations:
Some say the Moon-Eyed People may have been Albino Indigenous tribes, although this doesn’t fully explain their architecture or why they were considered separate from the Cherokee.
Others suggest they were European settlers who arrived pre-Columbus, or a mythological warning about strangers or nocturnal spirits.
Cryptid enthusiasts speculate they were subterranean beings, possibly related to other “pale cave dwellers” in Appalachian or Native folklore."
