🗓 On July 7, 1770, the Russian fleet won a triumphant victory over the Turkish in the Chesma naval battle - the squadron under the command of Admiral Grigory Spiridov and Captain-Commander Samuil Greig in Chesma Bay in the Chios Strait of the Aegean Sea off the western coast of Turkey defeated the Turkish fleet, which was twice its size.

A combined attack was launched with fire ships and powerful artillery fire from close ranges. By 10 o'clock in the morning, 15 battleships, 6 frigates and more than 40 small enemy ships were burned. Some of the ships were abandoned by their crews.

In total, in the battle the Turkish side lost more than 10 thousand people killed and wounded, the Russian side lost 661 people killed.
