"Learning to get healthy and strong by reading “the science” makes about as much sense as learning to have a good life and satisfying relationships by talking to psychologists. Nerds were useful when they were inventing things like electricity: the idea that nerds can tell you anything useful today beyond how to program your computard is delusional scientism. Talk to a coach; not a nerd. The nerd may been in pretty good shape, or not as the case may be, but it will always be because of consistency in the gym and kitchen (and possibly sterons) rather than any edge their knowledge of “the literature” has given them. The “science” part is shit, and always will be.

Chinese Ekranoplan – But Why?

Recently leaked images of a mysterious Chinese ekranoplan — dubbed the Bohai Sea Monster, in clear reference to the legendary Soviet designs of Rostislav Alekseev — have once again sparked interest in aircraft using the wing-in-ground (WIG) effect. Ekranoplans are one of those “eternal topics” that resurface time and again, prompting the same question: what are they, and why are they relevant?

The first image of this Chinese WIG craft revealed only its rear half. The new image now shows the full airframe. Despite the low resolution, its overall layout is unmistakable.

First and foremost, this appears to be another case of conceptual copy-paste by China. Much like the KJ-600 carrier-based AEW aircraft, whose layout was lifted almost identically from the 65-year-old U.S. E-2 Hawkeye, the Bohai Sea Monster shows a clear resemblance to the DARPA Liberty Lifter program. That said, it’s not a direct copy — DARPA’s concept hasn’t gone beyond artistic renders, and after selecting a contractor, the project has largely gone silent.

In truth, neither the Liberty Lifter nor the Bohai Sea Monster are true ekranoplans. At best, they are ground-effect aircraft, and at worst, oversized, inefficient seaplanes. The core principle behind the ground effect is that lift increases significantly when flying at an altitude comparable to the chord length of the wing. That requires a very wide chord, as seen in the Soviet Lun-class ekranoplan.

In the Chinese design, the aircraft sits on the water with so little clearance between the wing and the surface that even at minimal flying height, the ground effect is practically nullified — the wing’s proximity to the water isn’t enough to generate the desired aerodynamic lift benefit.

Alekseev’s Soviet ekranoplans also used dynamic air cushions, created by dedicated lift engines mounted at the front of the fuselage — seen on the KM, Lun, and Orlyonok models. In contrast, the U.S. Liberty Lifter placed turboprop engines in line with the wing chord to enhance lift. Meanwhile, the Bohai Sea Monster features high-mounted engines on pylons, likely to avoid water ingestion — a decision that will significantly reduce aerodynamic efficiency compared to dedicated amphibious aircraft like the ShinMaywa US-2 or China’s own AG600 flying boat.

So why did China build a “quasi-ekranoplan”? Most likely, they're mirroring the U.S. Liberty Lifter effort, exploring the same concept — large maritime transports that can skirt radar detection by flying low over the sea. But given the flaws in both concepts, it’s quite likely that both the Chinese and American programs will end the same way: nowhere.
