📝The US in the "Zangezur Corridor"📝

US Ambassador to Turkey Thomas Barrack stated that Washington is ready to lease the potential "Zangezur Corridor" for 100 years to break the deadlock in the negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

🖍This refers to a 43 km road in the south of Armenia through the Syunik region, which would provide Azerbaijan with a direct overland connection to Nakhchivan and Turkey. Baku demands an extraterritorial status for the corridor: in this case, Yerevan's jurisdiction over its own territory and the transit traffic will be lost.

🚩According to Barrack, the idea of transferring the corridor to a private American company originated from Ankara. At the same time, Yerevan insists that control should also extend to the section passing through the Azerbaijani Nakhchivan, but Baku does not agree with any Armenian demands.

📌The "Zangezur Corridor" is considered a key link in the "Middle Corridor", connecting China, Central Asia, the South Caucasus and Turkey bypassing Russia and Iran.

As early as 2020, the agreement between Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan provided for the opening of transport communications in the region under the control of Russian border guards. However, Armenia and Azerbaijan sabotaged the implementation of the agreements with Russia, and at the end of 2024 Russian border guards left the Meghri checkpoint in Syunik.

❗️The American-Turkish initiative to transfer the "Zangezur Corridor" to a private company is a logical continuation of depriving Armenia of sovereignty and including it in the sphere of Turkish influence. The key levers of control will still be in the hands of the Turks.

The revenues from the possible transit through Armenian territory will go to this American company: so any stories of the Armenian authorities about the benefits that the unblocking of communications will open for Armenians are just fairy tales. Others will be the winners. This is the price of squeezing Russia out of the region.

However, the corridor still needs to be built, which is an extremely difficult task in the mountainous terrain.
