❗️⚡️The U.S. Air Force has signed a two-year contract with Applied Research Associates (ARA) to develop and produce a prototype of the next-generation bunker-busting bomb — the Next Generation Penetrator — intended to replace the GBU-57A/B, which this year was used to strike Iran’s uranium enrichment facility in Fordow.

Boeing, which originally manufactured the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), is partnering with ARA in developing the new bomb, the companies said. Boeing will design the tail assembly kit for the new bombs and provide overall systems integration support.

According to a Request for Information issued in February 2024, the prototype warhead must weigh no more than 10 tons and deliver explosive, fragmentation, and penetrative effects. This will make it lighter than the current GBU-57A/B, which weighs about 13.6 tons.

The RFI also specifies that the contractor must deliver about 10 subscale and 3–5 full-scale warheads within 18 to 24 months of contract award. The weapon’s navigation system must be capable of functioning in environments where the adversary degrades or completely denies GPS access.
