Reed is quite specific about the problem: AI. Artificial Intelligence is automating all the lower-level graduate jobs. These jobs are disappearing like snow in spring sun, meaning the entire career ladder is missing some bottom rungs. Reed’s advice? He says middle-class people should advise their kids to skip uni and look at learning manual labour. Plumbing, joinery, bricklaying.

AI is, in essence, mass-producing intelligence and universities specialise in expensive, artisanal, hand-crafted intelligence. That spells doom for the artisans, the way machine looms spelt doom for artisanal weavers in the early Industrial Revolution. It spells the end of the university.

Of course, not all universities will die. A few rich people will, I reckon, still send their kids somewhere at 18, simply for the social experience and networking – posh places like Oxbridge and Harvard will survive via sheer prestige.
