"Einstein’s attitude toward his own disabled son is reflected in the advice he offered his long-time close friend, Austrian physicist Paul Ehrenfest (1880–1933). He advised Ehrenfest to abandon his own Down-syndrome-afflicted son, saying “valuable persons should not be sacrificed to hopeless causes.” Unwilling to do so, yet overwhelmed by the situation, Ehrenfest, recently separated from his wife, shot and killed his son before ending his own life with the same revolver [[xlix], [l]]."

TIL that for decades, it was accepted that 54,246 Americans had died in the Korean War, and the Korean War memorial in Washington was etched with that number. In 2000, the figure was revised to 36,940 after it was discovered that a government clerk had made a clerical error in compiling the total.

"One week into his tenure as FBI Director, for example, Patel tweeted, “There will be no cover-ups, no missing documents, and no stone left unturned — and anyone from the prior or current Bureau who undermines this will be swiftly pursued. If there are gaps, we will find them. If records have been hidden, we will uncover them. And we will bring everything we find to the DOJ to be fully assessed and transparently disseminated to the American people as it should be.”
"But with Trump vociferously opposed to releasing the Epstein files, and seemingly anxious about his own exposure in them, Patel fell into line. The FBI director’s display of loyalty to his boss, “King Donald,” was received by the MAGA base as an act of betrayal, leading some of its loudest voices to question whether Patel had fallen under the influence of the same foreign government which Epstein served.
"They immediately homed in on the employer of Patel’s girlfriend, Prager U, a conservative pro-Israel propaganda outlet whose CEO, Marissa Streit, lists herself in her bio as a former member of Israel’s Unit 8200 cyber-spying division.
"Right-wing critics also mocked Patel’s pro-Israel groveling as he vied for the role of FBI Director, noting comments he made during a December 2024 Fox News appearance: “We need America to wake up and prioritize Israel, and bring home Israelis and make sure we stand by our number one ally.”

Today it’s teleoperation; tomorrow it’s training data. The real question: how fast until the robots learn enough to cut humans out of the loop?

Gallipoli was a costly failure for the Allies, with 27,000 French and nearly 115,000 British and dominion casualties. New Zealand suffered around 8000 casualties, including 2779 dead. Australia’s 28,000 casualties included more than 8700 fatalities. The Ottomans paid a heavy price for their victory: an estimated 250,000 men were killed or wounded defending Gallipoli. For the survivors, their families and communities, the effects of the campaign would last for many years.
Strategic factors determined the outcome of the campaign. Essentially, the Allies did not have enough men available at the crucial moments. Hamilton launched the campaign with five divisions against a roughly comparable Ottoman force operating on familiar territory. This rough parity continued throughout the campaign, with 13 Allied divisions eventually facing 14 Ottoman divisions. The British government’s lukewarm commitment to Gallipoli before July 1915 ensured that the Allied build-up was always too little, too late. Poor leadership also played a part in the Allied failure, with many men sacrificed in futile attacks at Anzac and Helles.
