TIL in 1897 an Arctic expedition tried to reach the North Pole in a hydrogen balloon, but the craft crashed after just two days. The crew died while trekking across the ice, and their fate remained unknown until their camp was discovered 33 years later, complete with diaries and undeveloped photos.

Benjamin Espen reviews The Wise of Heart.

"When it comes to the two sides, I was impressed by Schantz' version of gender affirmation theory, put into the mouth of the prosecuting attorney just like William Jennings Bryan's defense of biblical interpretation on the witness stand. Like a medieval disputation, Schantz gave the side he clearly does not agree with the chance to make its best argument.

"That Schantz' rhetorical opponents are not interested in returning the favor was vividly illustrated by Kickstarter shutting down the crowdfunding campaign originally intended to publish this book. Schantz was able to find an alternative platform, but [the] way in which real life rhymes with fiction here is eerie.

"This was an great book, both thought-provoking and interesting to read. The illustrations are top-notch as well. I'm happy to recommend it."

Vol 2: William Tell

To be honest, the tale from Myths & Legends that precedes this one is actually my favorite from the second volume of the Castalia Junior Classics. But since the story of King Robert of Sicily is too long to post here, we’ll go with this retelling of the central legend of the Confederation Helvetica instead, […]

"For years, doctors have been taught that high cholesterol causes heart attacks. They’ve passed the warning along to their patients, and most of us have believed them.

"But that idea came from one man: Ancel Keys.

"Keys cherry-picked data to make fat and cholesterol look deadly while ignoring the real culprit: sugar.

"John Yudkin tried to warn the world that sugar—not fat—was driving heart disease. But no one listened. He was ridiculed, silenced, and erased from history."

James chats to his Canadian friend, journalist and photographer Donna Laframboise, a veteran of the climate wars, about her latest book Thank You Truckers. It’s a series of very moving interviews with people who took part in the Freedom Convoy protests of January 2022. Don’t write off Canada! They’re not all cucked. Some of them have given their all to fight the President Bieber/Carney tyranny - and a lot of them are Christians.
Thank You, Truckers!

Ukraine's most widely-agreed upon plan right now is to refuse any concessions, temporarily freeze the war along the contact line (after a year of retreat), and wait for Russia to weaken to restart the fight with greater Western involvement.

It all hinges on one belief: that Russia is going to fall apart soon. And sooner or later, they will get to dismantle it. Why? Because "Putin is old". Because there are 30 thousand Western sanctions and Russia has been "running out of missiles" since 2022. Because SBU/CIA/MI6 are trying to destabilize Russia through terrorist attacks, weaponized scamming, sabotage, and assassinations. That's the core of the strategy.

On the ground, Ukraine is taking heavy damage every day. But Russia is far from unscathed as well, and that keeps hope alive. But the real source of confidence is the sense that Ukraine has "joined the West", aka the Entire World, while Russia is isolated. This belief is shaken now and then by Trump's shifts in tone, or by the likes of Orban and Fico, whom they loathe with a passion. Still, it's the main thing keeping spirits up. The pathos of "defending their land" is largely for external consumption, since most of them don't view Donbass or Crimea as truly theirs and remain conflicted about their own ethnic and linguistic identity. You don't spend a century forcing children to "speak their native tongue" and still fail at it. No other nation deals with that.

What if, instead, Ukraine gets taken off foreign life support and falls apart? A bankrupt country with half its 1991 population gone is already a zombie, but the dollar juice & the power of "Russia collapses tomorrow" delusion keeps it twitching just enough to fight a large-scale war. As long as the West remains invested in the conflict, the war machine continues to run, manpower permitting.

Ordinary Ukrainians are secretly terrified of the idea that they've been used as disposable pawns. That they've been had. But they're not willing to confront that thought. If they did, they'd hit an even worse realization: nobody other than Moscow elite actually cares about them. They're forever stuck in their assigned role -- chipping away at Russia at the cost of their own guts. They, so to speak, were bred for culling, and tragically, they helped build these conditions themselves.

It's all quite bleak, but World Peace will manifest once this war has been fought to its military conclusion. The only way to truly avoid spiraling bloodshed and the desire for revenge. Rhetoric and arguments fail in times of war, after all.
