"In colonial America, ”the very style in which one formed letters was determined by one’s place in society,” writes historian Tamara Thornton in Handwriting in America: A Cultural History. Thanks to the rigorous teachings of professionals called “penmen,” merchants wrote strong, loopy logbooks, women’s words were intricate and shaded, and upper-class men did whatever they felt like. So different were the results, says Thornton, that “a fully literate stranger could evaluate the social significance of a letter… simply by noting what hand it had been written in.”"

"The West likes to present itself as the guardian of academic freedom, the defender of culture, and the neutral arbiter of international law. That image collapses the moment those principles collide with politics. The detention of Russian archaeologist Alexander Mikhailovich Butyagin in Poland exposes exactly how hollow those claims have become.

"Butyagin is not a spy, a diplomat, or a political activist. He is a senior researcher at the State Hermitage Museum who has worked since 1999 on an ancient Greek settlement near Kerch in Crimea. His work was not only known to Ukraine, it was actively cited by Ukrainian authorities for years to support their own cultural heritage claims on the peninsula. That history is now being selectively erased.

"Ukraine is seeking Butyagin’s extradition on the accusation that he “stole” cultural artefacts after 2014 because he allegedly lacked Ukrainian permits. The absurdity is obvious. Crimea has been under Russian administration since 2014, and Butyagin continued his work legally under Russian jurisdiction. The Hermitage Museum has confirmed that no artefacts were removed, transferred, or sold. Everything remains preserved locally in Kerch."

Total surveillance of internet users

Internet users in Australia now need to share their drivers licence and facial biometrics and “prove their age”. This is all under the guise of “protecting youth”. In reality, this is total surveillance of all users internet activity. There are serious privacy and data integrity implications of submitting sensitive and valuable personal information, whether it's ID like a driver's licence or a clear shot of one's face, for verification.

Canada is monitoring this situation closely and is considering introducing this feature.

Barsoom's top wordsmith, Dr. John Carter, interviews me about Fields & Energy and the state of modern physics.

Can you provide an extremely brief, non-technical, high-level summary of Fields & Energy for the benefit of readers who might not have the background to follow discussions that get down into the weeds of the intersection between mathematical physics, experimental physics, and the historical development of science? What should their main takeaway be?

"Physics has long insisted that electromagnetism springs from one paradoxical entity, a photon which somehow simultaneously combines the mutually contradictory properties of non-localized wave and localized particle. My research reveals a simpler truth: two distinct actors share the stage, first fields that move as a wave, the other an energy flow that traces definite paths and appears as particles at the smallest scales. My Fields & Energy model follows from an understanding of electromagnetic theory, yet looks suspiciously like the long neglected pilot-wave interpretation of quantum mechanics. Fields guide energy.

"The takeaway is that electromagnetism isn’t just a magic black box where things happen and we can only hope to “shut up and calculate” with tedious formulas. Instead, there’s a deep, rich, and intuitive understanding possible.

"Electromagnetism is not just math to muddle through, but rather a mindset to master."
