A 32,000-year-old saber-toothed tiger kitten is being studied in Yakutia.

🐯In northeastern Yakutia, where permafrost stretches to the horizon, scientists have brought to light a find that even experienced paleontologists trembled at, because from under a layer of ancient ice they took out a saber-toothed tiger kitten, preserved so perfectly, as if it had just fallen asleep in the cold last night.

🐯Homotherium latidens is a "saber—toothed cat", a representative of an ancient genus of predators that inhabited North America, Eurasia and Africa during the Pleistocene epoch, when glacial winds shaped the landscape, and giant mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses and cave lions determined the rules of survival.

🐯The perfect preservation is explained by the cold, dryness and stability of the environment, which froze the body without decomposition, preserving the structure of the coat, the shape of the paws and even the thin whiskers.

Great review of The Brave and the Bold, third book in The Hidden Truth series.
https://amzn.to/3SpMAPK

"Schantz’s world building is, I think the make or break aspect of the book, and really the whole series, for most people. He goes into great detail describing the secret history behind the development of many technologies we take for granted today, as well as recapping some of the physics that the Circle is trying to keep secret. The intent is both to help the reader understand on a base level what the Circle is up to and how they go about accomplishing their goals of containing technological development and disrupting Western Civilization. Some readers might find the level of detail excessive. On the other hand, I find it draws me in even further, making the book difficult to put down to say the least. Part of that is because the author does such a good job describing things in an accessible way and the other is that most of the details are actually true. It makes you realize that the free market has never really been free."

"Every Christmas, Judas Iscariot is let out of Hell. Most people never leave, not even once, and they did not betray Our Lord and Savior to his agonizing if necessary death, so you might not expect him to get special treatment. In fact, Judas leaves Hell on a regular basis. As this infamous man told St. Brendan the Navigator, that night long long ago when the saint and his companions came across him on a frozen sea, he is released from Hell on Sundays, for the twelve days of Christmas, and a couple additional feast days beside."

"Gerard’s death, announced today, December 17, 2025, closes a chapter not only in television history, but in the long, evolving life of one of science fiction’s most durable characters.

When Buck Rogers returned to the screen at the end of the 1970s, science fiction was in the midst of a cultural recalibration. Sci-fi on television struggled with the post-Star Wars world. The genre was shaking off the cynicism of the post-Apollo era and rediscovering a sense of adventure, optimism, and wonder. Gerard’s Buck was not a relic of the past, nor a grim futurist anti-hero. He was something rarer: a bridge figure."

North Carolina academic James G. Leyburn, in a social history of the Scotch-Irish, described the Scots who moved to Ulster as humble folk with ambition and qualities of character that made good pioneers.  "Even Presbyterian ministers who worked among them in Ulster were usually from humbler walks of Scottish life, for The Kirk offered no sinecures for younger sons of the gentry."  Scots-Irish were a unique people and the extent of their influence in the establishment of the USA after the Revolutionary War was considerable.  Scots-Irish are described as clannish, contentious, hard to get on with, set in their ways.  A Scots-Irish prayer ran:  "Lord grant that I may always be right, for Thou knowest I am hard to turn."

In some Japan's schools, education isn’t just about knowledge — it’s about character. For the first three years of school, children in these specific institutes don’t take academic exams at all.

Instead, the focus is on respect, empathy, and moral values.

Students learn to clean their classrooms, serve lunch to their peers, and care for their environment. Teachers emphasize teamwork, discipline, and gratitude — qualities considered as vital as academic success.

Independence is Opportunity

Brien Niemeier retrospectively points out what should have been obvious, but wasn’t, to everyone all along: For most of the twentieth century, creative ambition followed a single noscript. We're going backwards in technology

Oh man, I'm just now being reminded that the entire modern internet was built on the understanding that RAM was going to be dirt cheap going forward and therefore optimization didn't have to be done. Because of this, web pages taking up over a GB of memory are not uncommon these days.

Looks like things have gotten bad enough with the RAM supply that the entire web being horrifically unoptimized might be a real problem soon. For the longest time it was hard to have a computer that was slow unless you were using something ancient, I think genuinely slow computers are going to come back again with RAM being the bottleneck

The icelandic cat who eats those who are not wearing their new clothes.

The Jólakötturinn, or the Yule Cat is a monstrously large creature from Icelandic folklore that is said to roam the snowy countryside during Christmas, with a particular appetite for anyone who has not received new clothes before Christmas Eve or who did not wear them.

She is also the pet of the troll witch Grýla. She is used to threaten naughty children, because she loves to eat them. Grýla's sons are the Jólasveinar, the thirteen Icelandic Santa Clauses, dwarves who originally did not bring gifts, but stole things or played pranks. They are on the move between December 12 and January 6.
