The panic around Twitter is centred on a "painful catch-22"—Twitter is too big to leave to Musk, meaning too big to remain private.
Twitter is crucial to CIA operations—it's used to gauge and nudge public opinion, control messaging, intimidate intermediaries, spread disinformation, and it's a massive dragnet. If Musk forces them to admit that Twitter is "the public square" and a load-bearing pillar of democracy then it will have to be made subject to legal protections regarding public access and transparency. Greenblatt can't back down because "never again" is the categorical imperative of modernity and can never ratchet down even one notch. If Musk calls his bluff on Twitter being replaceable, this will be another lose-lose situation for the Deep State. If they replace it, its user base will collapse overnight. If they nationalize it, they will neutralize its value. If they do nothing, they will have ceded a little bit of sovereignty.
