Was just thinking about how so many European surnames derive from jobs or trades, and if people 1000 years from now used today’s jobs as surnames, what would that look like.
John Influencer.
George Camgirl.
Dave Salesrep.
Mary Nutrionist.
Ryan Therapist.
Then I got thinking about how it seems like there was a cut off point where jobs stopped being used as surnames. When and why did that happen?
Also it’s kind of amusing to note which jobs were used as surnames. Baker is a surname, but Butcher isn’t. 🤔 Why?
We have Cooper, Smith, Taylor, Fletcher, but no Writer, Actor, Builder, Barman,…why didn’t they become surnames?
These are the things I think about on lazy Sunday afternoons.
EDIT: I should say Butcher isn’t as common a surname as Baker. According to the internet, Baker is the 37th most common surname in England, whereas Butcher comes in at 393. In the US it’s even less common, ranked at 1,546.
But surely butchers were just as prevalent in old time societies as bakers, so the huge discrepancy in popularity as a surname is interesting.

For me, much good has resulted from the fake pandemic.
- I now question the need for ANY vaccine;
- I now question everything I've been taught about history;
- I no longer trust "the science";
- I've realised most domestic affairs are downstream from global affairs.
You?
