Charles Hatfield - The Man Who Sold Rain
Early in his career, Hatfield studied meteorology, physics, chemistry, bought chemicals, and conducted experiments. In 1902, he obtained a secret mixture of 23 chemicals that caused precipitation in the form of rain.
At first he made the usual bets. Eventually Hatfield began to sell rain for money. His fame grew and he was already contracting for thousands of dollars. In 1928 Hatfield filled Big Bear Lake with rain water, and a year later he extinguished a fire in Honduras.
Charles died on January 12, 1958, without revealing the secret formula for the powder. Hatfield caused more than 500 rainstorms during his career.

Somewhere along the way the two men vanished in the endless snow. Searchers later found Wegener’s body and reported that “his eyes were open, and the expression on his face was calm and peaceful, almost smiling.” It was as if he had foreseen his ultimate vindication.
