This is a very useful essay about historical distortion regarding the Belgian Congo.

All my adult life, I have heard that the Belgians, under King Leopold II, were the worst, most brutal and most ruthless of European colonial powers. It seems that this belief is almost entirely due to a book published in 1998 by a (half) Jewish journalist. To distort the history, Adam Hochschild employs a wide array of tactics: gross misrepresentation, lying by omission, twisting of facts, selective editing, mis-translation of statements.

In fact, the Belgians and King Leopold in particular were most benevolent, desperately trying to civilise a barbaric land where appalling things were commonplace. Atrocities blamed on the Belgians were actually the Congolese brutalising each other as they had since time immemorial. Arab slavers were also involved, complicating the work of the Belgians in putting a stop to it all.

From when they took formal control of the Congo in 1908, the barbarity ended and life in the country greatly improved.

This is malicious revision of history perhaps even more egregious than claiming that the British Empire, which expended many lives and great fortunes to end the Atlantic Slave Trade, was pro-slavery.
