🇸🇩 In Sudan, protesters mark 1 year since deadliest single-day crackdown on anti-coup demonstrations

Thousands of Sudanese demonstrated on Thursday. They called for justice for victims of a violent crackdown since last year's October 25 military coup.

Thursday's protests drew the largest crowds in northern Khartoum. They marked one year since the deadliest single-day crackdown on anti-coup demonstrations saw 15 people killed.

"We are in this struggle for one reason: We don't want the military [rule] at all. We are against anything involving the military [rule]. We will fight until we have a democratic civilian rule through free elections," protestor Mahmoud Saeed said.

Ongoing talks between the main civilian bloc, the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), and the military are the latest bid to break the political stalemate.

The two sides recently welcomed a transitional constitution developed by the Sudanese Bar Association as a basis for a lasting agreement.

🇺🇸🇰🇪 Bill Gates pledges 5% of his wealth to Africa's health and agriculture

American billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates has pledged to use 5.4% of his net worth to finance Africa’s health and agriculture sectors, which he believes anchor the continent’s progress.

Gates spent his time in Kenya visiting primary health care centers, medical and agricultural research institutes, and smallholder farms.

His tour culminated in a town hall meeting with hundreds of students at the University of Nairobi on Nov. 17 where he announced $7 billion funding to help Africa fight diseases and boost agricultural capacity in the next four years.

However, Africa will have to look for more money to support its health and agriculture sectors as it needs 20 times of the $7 billion.

🇧🇫 Protests against France in Burkina Faso

Demonstrations against the French presence in Burkina Faso took place on November 18, 2022, in Ouagadougou. The demonstrators demanded France recall its accredited ambassador to the country, as well as the army. Tear gas shots were heard outside the French embassy in Ouagadougou to disperse the demonstrators.

Some believe that these new protests represent requirements for the Executive to clarify its position regarding cooperation with France. Since in the first days that followed his taking office, the Prime Minister, Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela, had hinted that he would not let himself be given orders by the street.

Earlier in October, France sent six military elite units of the GIGN to Ouagadougou to ensure the safety of the ambassador and diplomatic staff.

The $500 million line has capacity to transmit 2,000 megawatts of electricity, potentially earning Ethiopia as much as $100 million annually.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a giant hydro-power dam on a Nile River tributary, began generating electricity earlier this year, a project it sees as key to economic development but which has stirred tensions with downstream neighbors Egypt and Sudan.
