More than 5,700 schools have been closed in Burkina Faso due to the security situation marked by jihadist attacks, depriving one million students of access to education, the NGO Save The Children warned Wednesday.

"Burkina has just crossed the dramatic threshold of one million children affected by the closure of schools due to the security crisis," the NGO wrote in a statement, noting that 5,709 schools are closed. This is twice as many as the figures announced by the government earlier this year.

Nigeria's state-owned NNPC Ltd on Tuesday started drilling for oil and gas at a field in northern Nigeria that has reserves of 1 billion barrels, as the country seeks to produce crude outside the Niger Delta for the first time.

NNPC said in a statement that phase one of the Kolmani project in the northeast would have an oil refinery, gas processing unit, 300-megawatt power plant and fertilizer plant producing 2,500 tonnes a day

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday said he wanted to launch proceedings against fugitive Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony in his absence.

Prosecutor Karim Khan said he had requested authorisation to hold a hearing on the confirmation of charges against Kony, who is the ICC's longest standing suspect at large.

The Burkinabè army announced this Thursday, November 24 that it has managed to enlist more than 90,000 civilian defense volunteers. Civilians called to supplement the army in the fight against jihadism.

"Of the needs estimated at 50,000, more than 90,000 are registered," wrote the commander of the Patriotic defence and surveillance brigade (BVDP) Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Sawadogo.

🇸🇹 Failed coup attempt in Sao Tome and Principe - Prime Minister

A coup attempt failed on Thursday night in Sao Tome and Principe, a small Gulf of Guinea island nation considered a model of parliamentary democracy in Africa, Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada said.

Four men, including the former president of the outgoing national assembly Delfim Neves and a former military officer who had already attempted a coup in 2009, were arrested and tried to attack the army headquarters, Trovoada said in a video authenticated and sent to AFP in Libreville by Justice Minister Ilsa Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz.

🇩🇿 Algerian court sentences 49 to death for mob killing amid wildfires

An Algerian court on Thursday (Nov. 24) sentenced 49 people to death over the lynching of Djamel Ben Ismail, a man falsely accused of starting deadly forest fires in August last year.

The North African nation has, however, maintained a moratorium on carrying out death sentences since the last executions in 1993. Which means that the 49 people will likely serve life in prison instead.

Libya on Thursday (Nov. 24) expelled more than 200 migrants who'd entered its terrtory illegaly.

Embassy staff from the migrants' home nations watched the process. The group of returnees included "105 Egyptians, 101 Chadians and 20 Sudanese".

Libya is a much travelled by route for people fleeing conflict and poverty across the continent, seeking refuge across the Mediterranean in Europe.

International observers have announced that no irregularities were recorded in the November 20 elections in Equatorial Guinea.

Preliminary reports by observers from the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) stated that "the electoral process took place in an atmosphere of peace" and "no irregularities" were recorded.

The alleged rationing of the days of selling petrol among some petroleum products marketers who have formed cartels has worsened the petrol scarcity currently rocking Lagos, Abuja and other cities in the country.

The marketing companies had through their umbrella associations allegedly put the secret rationing rule that ensures that members sell petrol on the days allocated to them.

According to a source, to ensure compliance to the rule, the marketers, whose turn it is not to sell on a particular date resort to hoarding the product in the day time while selling to black marketers at night and above approved price.
