Fired employee accessed company’s computer 'test system' and deleted servers, causing it to lose S$918,000

Kandula Nagaraju, 39, was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months for unauthorized access to NCS SG's "test system". Kandula’s former team managed this system which was used to test new software before launch.

After being fired in November 2022, Kandula, feeling "confused and upset", used administrator credentials to access NCS SG's test system from India and Singapore, deleting 180 virtual servers between January and March 2023.

Kandula wrote and executed noscripts to delete the servers despite being unauthorised. His laptop, containing the noscripts, was seized by the police. He had searched on Google for noscripts to delete virtual servers.

His actions caused NCS SG a loss of S$918,000.

Dave Burke steps down as VP of engineering for Android

Dave Burke, VP of engineering for Android, announced he's stepping down but will remain as an "advisor" while exploring roles in AI/bio at Alphabet. Burke, with Google since 2007, played key roles in Nexus, Pixel, Android TV, and Chrome mobile apps. Burke hasn’t said who will be taking over his role going forward.

There’s no way to sum up almost 1.5 decades of work in a single email. But I wanted to say thank you for the once-in-a-lifetime, awe-inspiring opportunity. I stayed so long because of our incredible impact – building the future of computing at planet scale.

Immediate changes to Android aren't expected.

New Linux malware is controlled through emojis sent from Discord

A new Linux malware named 'DISGOMOJI' has been discovered, targeting Indian government agencies. Linked to a Pakistan-based threat actor 'UTA0137', it uses Discord and emojis for command and control (C2). The malware targets the custom Linux distribution BOSS, used by Indian government agencies.

It was found in a UPX-packed ELF executable within a ZIP archive, likely distributed via phishing emails. Upon execution, it displays a PDF lure, a beneficiary form from India's Defence Service Officer Provident Fund and downloads additional payloads including DISGOMOJI and 'uevent_seqnum.sh' to steal data. Using the open-source project discord-c2, it connects to a Discord server, awaiting emoji commands to exfiltrate data and steal credentials.

DISGOMOJI listens for new messages in the command channel on the Discord server. C2 communication takes place using an emoji-based protocol where the attacker sends commands to the malware by sending emojis to the command channel, with additional parameters following the emoji where applicable. While DISGOMOJI is processing a command, it reacts with a “Clock” emoji in the command message to let the attacker know the command is being processed. Once the command is fully processed, the “Clock” emoji reaction is removed and DISGOMOJI adds a “Check Mark Button” emoji as a reaction to the command message to confirm the command was
executed.

WhatsApp Beta Ditches Google Drive for Chat Transfer Between Phones

The latest WhatsApp beta for Android (2.24.13.6) is working on a new feature to transfer chat history from an old phone without using Google Drive. This feature, still in development, will let you move your chats using a QR code in the app settings, making it super easy.

The new feature could potentially work across different platforms, for example, from Android to iOS. Right now, moving chat history between iOS and Android needs a physical cable. Older Android versions can’t use this feature.

US government sues Adobe for ‘deceiving’ subnoscriptions that are too hard to cancel

The lawsuit alleges Adobe hides the terms of its annual, paid monthly plan in the “fine print and behind optional textboxes and hyperlinks,” because of which they do not properly disclose the early termination fee incurred upon cancellation “that can amount to hundreds of dollars.”

Customers who try to cancel experience difficulties such as navigating through multiple webpages and pop-ups, and dropped calls or disconnected chats. The lawsuit also targets two Adobe executives, Maninder Sawhney (sales), as well as David Wadhwani (digital media).

Adobe trapped customers into year-long subnoscriptions through hidden early termination fees and numerous cancellation hurdles. Americans are tired of companies hiding the ball during subnoscription signup and then putting up roadblocks when they try to cancel.

Zomato is in talks with Paytm to acquire its movies and events business

Zomato is in advanced talks to acquire Paytm’s movie and events ticketing business for around Rs 2,000 crore. This acquisition aligns with Zomato’s strategy to expand its "going-out" offerings, adding to its existing food, grocery, and entertainment services. This would be Zomato's second-largest acquisition after Blinkit in 2022.

Paytm aims to focus on its core payments and financial services. Both companies confirmed discussions but emphasized that no binding agreement has been reached yet.

We have noticed that there are certain news articles circulating in the mainstream media with the subject 'Zomato in talks to acquire Paytm’s movies, ticketing business'. This voluntary disclosure is being made to clarify our stance on the matter given that any transaction that is considered potentially meaningful may create uncertainty in the market. We acknowledge that we are in discussions with Paytm for the aforementioned transaction, however, no binding decision has been taken at this stage that would warrant a Board approval and subsequent disclosure in accordance with applicable
law.

Apple discontinues Apple Pay Later

Apple has discontinued its "buy now, pay later" service, Apple Pay Later, which launched in the U.S. in October 2023. The service allowed users to apply for loans ranging from $50 to $1,000 and split the purchase into four equal payments over six weeks, with no fees or interest. Existing loans can still be managed via the Wallet app.

Apple plans to introduce new global installment loan features through eligible credit and debit cards and lenders, starting later this year, aiming to provide more flexible payment options globally through Apple Pay.

Starting later this year, users across the globe will be able to access installment loans offered through credit and debit cards, as well as lenders, when checking out with Apple Pay. With the introduction of this new global installment loan offering, we will no longer offer Apple Pay Later in the U.S. Our focus continues to be on providing our users with access to easy, secure and private payment options with Apple Pay, and this solution will enable us to bring flexible payments to more users, in more places across the globe, in collaboration with Apple Pay enabled banks and lenders.

Security bug allows anyone to spoof Microsoft employee emails

Vsevolod Kokorin, also known as Slonser, discovered a bug that allows spoofing of Microsoft corporate email accounts, making phishing attempts appear legitimate. The bug affects emails sent to Outlook accounts only, which is a pool of at least 400 million users.

After Microsoft initially dismissed his report, Kokorin shared his findings on X/Twitter, leading to widespread support and prompting Microsoft to acknowledge the issue and revisit some of his older email-related reports. This incident shows how Microsoft does not even care about security reports.

Google Cancels YouTube Premium Subnoscriptions for VPN Workaround Users

Google is canceling YouTube Premium subnoscriptions for users who used VPNs to get cheaper rates available in other regions. According to Reddit, many users had their memberships canceled because they used VPNs to hide their location and access lower prices, like $2.44 per month in Ukraine instead of $13.99 per month in the US.

YouTube's different prices are meant to fit local economies, but using VPNs breaks their rules. Redditors who have contacted customer service mention that the cancelation is because the user “moved” to a different location than the one they signed up from.

Microsoft is rolling out a new Copilot app for Windows 11 and 10

Microsoft has introduced a standalone Copilot app for Windows 11 and 10, rolling it out to Insiders on the Beta and Release Preview channels. This app, which replaces the integrated system flyout, allows users to move and resize it like a regular app, enhancing flexibility.

It features a user interface similar to OpenAI's earlier release, supports the GPT-4o language model, and offers plugin and model configuration options. The transition to an app means the removal of the WIN + C shortcut and tighter integration.

And yes, it's a web app for https://copilot.microsoft.com/, with Edge WebView2

[Copilot in Windows]
[ADDED 6/19] As part of this update, we’re also evolving the Copilot experience on Windows as an app that will be pinned to the taskbar. This enables users to get the benefits of a traditional app experience, including the ability to resize, move, and snap the window – feedback we’ve heard from users throughout the preview of Copilot in Windows. This model also allows Microsoft to more agilely develop and optimize the experience based on user feedback. PLEASE NOTE: Managed commercial devices will not receive this new experience. This includes devices not running Windows 11 Home and are managed by an IT administrator.
[ADDED 6/19] As part of the Copilot experience’s evolution on Windows to become an app that is pinned to the taskbar, we are retiring the WIN + C keyboard shortcut.

Biden bans Kaspersky antivirus software in US over security concerns

The Biden administration has announced a ban on Kaspersky antivirus software, effective September 29, 2024, due to national security concerns. The ban prohibits Kaspersky from selling and updating its products in the U.S. and operating its cloud-based threat platform, Kaspersky Security Network (KSN).

The Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) asserts that the Russian government could exploit Kaspersky to access sensitive U.S. information. Despite Kaspersky’s denial of ties to the Russian government and claims of transparency, the U.S. government remains unconvinced. Users continuing to use Kaspersky software after the deadline will do so at their own risk.

Today, the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced a Final Determination prohibiting Kaspersky Lab, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of a Russia-based anti-virus software and cybersecurity company, from directly or indirectly providing anti-virus software and cybersecurity products or services in the United States or to U.S. persons.

Russia has shown time and again they have the capability and intent to exploit Russian companies, like Kaspersky Lab, to collect and weaponize sensitive U.S. information, and we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to safeguard U.S. national security and the American people.

Proton is going non-profit!

Remember one of the best open-source password manager, VPN, e-mail and storage services by Proton? Yep, they're going non-profit now. They have adopted the swiss non-profit structure which blocks any takeovers and sets a lot of trustees which help in keeping Proton's original mission intact.

Proton-AG itself will continue to remain for-profit, however, rest assured, we can sleep peacefully knowing our beloved Proton services are safe.
