RBI Introduces Delegated Payments Through UPI
The Reserve Bank of India has announced a new feature allowing delegated payments through UPI. This enables a primary user to authorize a secondary user to make UPI transactions from the primary user's bank account, with transaction limits set by the primary user.
The system aims to make UPI accessible to minors and individuals without bank accounts through a 'family account' feature. These transactions will be limited to savings accounts only. Additionally, the RBI has increased the threshold for tax payments via UPI from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh per transaction.

End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyone
Nova Launcher, a popular Android custom launcher, has undergone significant changes after its parent company, Branch Metrics, laid off over 100 employees, including nearly the entire Nova team. Only founder Kevin Barry remains, who is continuing work on Nova 8.1 but with a reduced scope.
The now former Nova Launcher employees seem to echo the sentiment that there’s no reason to panic and that Kevin will continue his good work. With the loss of customer support and PR, future development is expected to slow, focusing mainly on minor updates and bug fixes.

Turkey restores access to Instagram
Turkey has restored access to Instagram after blocking it on August 2. The ban came after the accusations that Instagram censored condolence posts related to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh's assassination.
Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, announced the lift, stating the ban was due to Instagram's lack of response to requests concerning "catalog crimes." After discussions, Instagram agreed to meet Turkey's demands and address issues related to content censorship.

Apple adds nearly endless 20 percent fee for developers in latest EU update
Apple is updating its App Store rules in the EU in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) but is adding new fees that may discourage developers from using them. Starting this fall, developers can include external purchase links in their apps, but Apple will charge a "store services fee" of up to 25% on sales made within a year of app installation, even if the purchase is made outside the app.
These changes are seen as a way for Apple to maintain control and revenue, despite EU regulations aimed at promoting competition.

LiteGapps Included an Ad Link for Over 6 Months
LiteGapps included a noscript related to ads, which has been found to contain a phishing link capable of sending instant OTPs, according to @thesaltyspitoon_dump, which is probably not true.
This noscript is designed to check if Chrome browser (stable/canary/beta/dev) is installed on an Android device and then open the ad link using the browser.
However, the developer announced that the ad code was removed two days ago because it was "ineffective" and that the embedded link in the installer is from Adsterra as the ad service provider, not phishing.
To stay safe, either update to the latest version or consider switching to an alternative GApps package.

X faces GDPR complaints for unauthorized use of data for AI training
European privacy advocate NOYB has filed nine GDPR complaints against X for allegedly using the personal data of over 60 million European users without consent to train its AI model, Grok.
The unauthorized Grok training occurred between May 7 and August 1, 2024. NOYB questions why X didn't inform users about this data usage, what happened to EU data already ingested, and how the company plans to separate EU from non-EU data.
Despite an agreement between X and Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner to suspend data processing until September, NOYB finds the response insufficient and is pushing for a full investigation.

Apple Intelligence: Potential Price Tiers, Features, and Subnoscription Models
Analysts have claimed that Apple may charge for some of the more advanced Apple Intelligence features at some stage, with fees of $10-20 per month.
One possibility, they say, is that the company would require an Apple One subnoscription for access to the full set of AI features. For Apple Intelligence, a potential structure could look like this:
Apple Intelligence may introduce advanced features, but it could take up to three years to develop. In short, you won’t need to worry about paying for Siri anytime soon.

Disney Seeking Dismissal of Raglan Road Death Lawsuit Because Victim Was Disney+ Subscriber
Disney is seeking the dismissal of a wrongful death lawsuit involving a woman who died from anaphylaxis after a meal at Disney Springs. The company cites an arbitration waiver in Disney+ terms and conditions, which "requires users to arbitrate all disputes with the company."
Disney claims the woman agreed to this waiver when she signed up for a one-month free trial of Disney+ on her PlayStation console in 2019. Attorneys for the woman’s family called Disney’s argument “preposterous,” saying it’s absurd to think all Disney+ subscribers waived claims due to 'buried' language in terms and conditions.

TRAI Cracks Down on Spam Calls, CBI Investigates Call Center Scams
India's Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) has directed service providers to halt promotional calls from unregistered callers and blacklist them for up to two years. Telecom companies must now submit bi-monthly reports on actions taken against scam callers.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered FIRs against ten Indian call centers following complaints from Amazon and Microsoft. These centers allegedly scammed foreign customers by offering fake technical support and unauthorized account charges for services like Amazon Fire Stick activation.

You'll have to start paying for unlicensed OneDrive accounts next year
Starting January 27, 2025, Microsoft will automatically archive unlicensed OneDrive for work or school accounts after 90 days, charging $0.05 per GB monthly storage fee. Archived data will be inaccessible until the organization pays a $0.60 per GB fee to reactivate it. If fees aren't paid, the account will be deleted within 93 days.
Microsoft is implementing this change to improve security and compliance by encouraging better account management. Organizations will need to either re-license, delete, or pay to archive unlicensed accounts, except for education, GCC, and DoD customers who are exempt from this policy.
