YouTube is going to put ads after 'peak' moments in videos
YouTube is introducing a new ad format called "Peak Points" which uses Gemini AI to identify the moments having the highest viewer engagement and then places the ad right after it. This aims to benefit advertisers as viewers recall ads better when emotionally engaged.
However, this might be frustrating for the viewers especially when they're deeply engaged and want no interruptions. A shoppable product feed has also been introduced where users can can browse and purchase items during an ad.

Netflix to show generative AI ads midway through streams in 2026
Netflix, at its second annual upfront to advertisers announced that it has made "interactive" mid-roll and pause ads that play in the middle of a session and make the use of Generative AI. Netflix subscribers can expect to see this roll out in 2026. Netflix started testing out these ads in July of 2024.
The company thinks its advertising business is in its early stages meaning we can expect their efforts to push ads rise further in the upcoming years. It has also planned to double its advertising revenue in 2025.

Proton threatens to leave Switzerland over new surveillance law
Switzerland's surveillance law, which currently only applies to mobile networks and ISPs, is being considered to be expanded to require social networks, messaging apps, and VPNs to identify and retain user data.
Proton, serving encrypted email and a VPN to over 100 million users, says the amendment could force it to leave Switzerland, threatening privacy and encryption. CEO Andy Yen compares it to Russia's laws, saying it would "hurt Switzerland's ability to compete globally."
Alexis Roussel, co-founder of NymVPN, promised to move if regulation passes. Some Swiss cantons and parties have opposed the changes, as it is a major violation of the right to privacy. Public consultations ended on May 6, with the government’s decision still pending.

India opens 6GHz spectrum for license-free WiFi use
In order to allow unlicensed use of technologies such as Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, the Indian government has released draft regulations to delicense the 5925–6425 MHz segment of the 6 GHz spectrum.
Faster, low-latency Wi-Fi 6E is made possible by India's delicensing of the 6 GHz band, which also lowers internet costs, improves connectivity in rural areas, complies with international standards, and generates ₹25,000 crore in economic value. All of these factors promote innovation, competition, and digital inclusion throughout the nation.
Telecom operators are against the plan; arguing that the band should be set aside for 5G in order to comply with IMT-2020 standards, even though tech companies support it.

Mozilla is shutting down Pocket and Fakespot
Pocket will be shutting down on July 8, 2025. After that, Pocket goes into export-only mode, and all data will be deleted forever on October 8, 2025. On May 22, the app and its add-ons were taken down from stores, and new sign-ups are not allowed.
After October 8, the Pocket API will no longer work. Mozilla says that changing web habits are to blame. Annual subscribers get prorated refunds, monthly plans won't renew, and the newsletter, now "Ten Tabs", will continue on weekdays.
Mozilla is also shutting down Fakespot and Firefox's built-in Review Checker tool on June 10, 2025, due to sustainability changes.

The Browser Company Might Open Source or sell Arc
The Browser Company is considering the option of either selling or open-sourcing its Arc Browser as it pivots towards a new AI-driven browser called Dia.
Dia is designed to be more user-friendly than Arc, which the company acknowledges was often too complicated and inconsistent for the average user. Since then, Arc has only seen bug fixes and security updates, with no new features.
CEO Josh Miller pointed out a “novelty tax” problem and a lack of cohesion in Arc’s design. While there’s a strong desire among users for Arc to be open-sourced, the company is hesitant due to its dependence on the proprietary Arc Development Kit.
