Hang on I actually have thought about this a little too much, it’s kinda embarrassing.

Max either told him a few months after they became teammates, when he realized he could actually trust Daniel, probably while they were both drunk, because of course as much as he knew he could trust him he was still a kid with a homophobic father active in a homophobic sport.

Or again, while young and drunk, pressured by everything he was going through back then, overwhelmed with his feelings for someone he could finally trust, yet scared about how Daniel might react, he makes a shaky uncertain move to kiss Daniel.

I suspect Daniel stopped him though because he was too young, and they were both drunk and Daniel always felt so protective and responsible over Max, this of course leades to Max panic and feel unwanted.

Daniel tries to tell him it’s okay, and he did nothing wrong, and reason with him why this is a bad idea, but Max already feels insecure so after that he tries to distance himself but Daniel being Daniel won’t let this go on for too long.
