US officials are looking into the national security risks linked to an AI advancement made by the Chinese company DeepSeek, as mentioned by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. This follows the US Navy's decision to prohibit its members from using DeepSeek's apps due to potential security and ethical issues.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, stated it will collaborate with the US government to protect its technology from competitors. DeepSeek's affordable AI model has negatively impacted the stock prices of US tech companies as investors reevaluate their AI investments. Leavitt noted that the National Security Council is exploring the implications of this situation, reflecting US President Donald Trump's opinion that DeepSeek's progress should alert the tech industry.

The Navy warned its personnel against using DeepSeek's app, citing concerns over its model’s origin. David Sacks, the White House's AI czar, claimed DeepSeek might have learned from OpenAI's models through a technique called knowledge distillation. OpenAI confirmed that other companies aim to replicate its models and emphasized the importance of protecting its intellectual property. DeepSeek reported experiencing cyber attacks and has limited registrations due to these issues.

AI boom is sucking water from drought-prone areas

Every time you use AI for tasks like writing essays or creating memes, it sends requests to massive data centers that require significant water for cooling. Since 2022, over 160 new AI data centers have been established in water-scarce regions of the U.S., such as Texas and Arizona. A single 100-megawatt data center consumes about 2 million liters of water daily, enough for 6,500 households.

By 2030, global data center water usage could reach 1.2 trillion liters annually, primarily due to evaporative cooling methods that waste around 80% of the water. While some tech companies have pledged to be "water positive" by 2030, many continue to take more than they give back, prompting local communities, like those in Oregon, to sue companies like Google for transparency on their water usage. AI may be advanced, but its construction raises serious water management concerns.

⚔️ OpenAI vs. Microsoft? The AI Dream Team Might Be Breaking Up

Things are getting messy between two of the biggest names in AI. OpenAI is reportedly gearing up for a legal showdown with its biggest backer, Microsoft — accusing the tech giant of anticompetitive behavior. Yes, the same Microsoft that poured $1B into OpenAI back in 2019 and powers ChatGPT through Azure.

Now, OpenAI is flirting with Google Cloud, dropping hints of independence, and might even push for a federal antitrust review. The vibes? Not great.

Microsoft already stepped away from its OpenAI board seat last year to dodge regulatory heat. But if this breakup goes public, it could shake the foundation of the most powerful alliance in Silicon Valley’s AI arms race.

Stay tuned — the AI world’s biggest power couple might be heading for a very public split.
