Galápagos tortoises are the largest land turtles in the world and can weigh more than 400 kilograms, which is about 880 pounds. They can live for more than 150 years 🐢🌴
Their slow nature and calm temperament made them a symbol of the Galápagos and an inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution. Each island has its own subspecies with a slightly different shell shape.

On nesting beaches, an enormous number of turtles can hatch at the same time. Some colonies include thousands of females laying their eggs together 🐢🌊
For example, during the so called arribada of olive ridley turtles, more than one hundred thousand hatchlings can emerge within just a few days. Sadly, only a tiny fraction of them survive to adulthood, often fewer than one in a thousand.
